Cowboy was East of Cortez a few miles and he heard several shots being fired. There were too many to be someone hunting deer or rabbits. He decided to investigate and rode up to the top of a nearby hill to see what was happening. Down below in the large boulders, there were two shooters with rifles shooting at someone pinned down behind a small brushy hill. Cowboy pulled out his looking glass and saw there were two men with their badges flashing in the sunlight. After a closer look he recognized it was Sheriff Broadbent and maybe a deputy. The sheriff was firing back with a sixgun. Where was his rifle? Checking more he saw the Sheriff's horse tied about 50 yards away with the rifle still in the scabbard. The outlaws in the boulders could take out anyone attempting to run for their horses.
Cowboy pulled his Winchester 1873 in 44-40 caliber and jacked a shell in the barrel. He started rapid fire at the outlaws from his high vantage point. The two owlhoots could see that they were open targets for Cowboy so they broke and ran for their horses. Cowboy mounted his horse, Zorro, and leisurely road down to meet the Sheriff. "Howdy Sheriff", Cowboy said to the rattled Sheriff. "I am really glad to see you, Cowboy. We were in a bad situation. Those two just robbed the bank", the Sheriff replied. Then the Sheriff said, "Do you want a job working for me?". Cowboy said, "Thanks for the offer, but I am a cattle rancher. I ain't no Lawman. And I sure hope you catch up to those two outlaws."
