This cache is about the size of a paperback novel and tucked quite out of sight. Explaining MST3K

The best way to explain Mystery Science Theater 3000 is to see it for yourself. A lot of the episodes are available for free on YouTube and there is a channel on Pluto TV devoted entirely to MST3K (and another devoted to the spin-off series Rifftrax). There's also a reboot of the series on Netflix along with a few of the original episodes. For the sake of making the introduction easy for you, search up Episode 903: Pumaman (pronounced 'pew-ma' ... that will make sense when you see it).

The Mads (evil scientists) force Mike Nelson and the bots to watch a film about a mild-mannered paleontologist who finds himself endowed with super powers from his alien ancestors. He uses his abilities to defeat the plans of the villainous Dr. Kobras. It is straight up terrible, even with Donald Pleasence as its star power. But that's the fun part ... watching a terrible movie while Mike and the bots riff it (make fun of it).

The goal of the Mads (as always) is to find a way to drive Mike and the Bots insane by breaking down their psyches with bad movies. Mike and the bots try to save their sanity by making relentless fun of the movie as they watch it.

Another example of a good intro movie is Episode 306: Time of the Apes. Some Japanese directors decided to raid the trash bin from the 70's original Planet of the Apes makeup trailer and create their own take on Charlton Heston's favorite movie.

About the Show

Originally airing for 11 seasons from 1988 to 1999, Mystery Science Theater 3000 immediately won over fans and became one of the most beloved cult TV shows of all time, making a human mind experiment more entertaining than anyone could have predicted.

When Joel Robinson (played by show creator Joel Hodgson) is shot into space and forced to watch bad movies while mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieau) and his crony, TV's Frank (Frank Conniff), monitor his mind, Joel builds a cast of lovable robot sidekicks to help keep his sanity: Crow, Tom Servo, Gypsy and Cambot. It's only through their wisecracks, quips and friendships that they make it through a barrage of increasingly terrible cinema--and the audience in turn gets a veritable treasure trove of gut-busting hilarity.
