The Gunnison River and possibly the Colorado River flowed through this area carving Unaweep Canyon, to the west of this site. Tributaries cutting into the soft Mancos Shale to the north, coupled with the rising Uncompahgre arch, caused the river to go around the Uncompahgre Plateau. Cactus Park was part of the ancestral flow of the Gunnison River from 1 to 5 million years ago. The Gunnison Gravels Research Natural Area protects the unique gravel deposits which prove the Gunnison River flowed through this site during prehistoric times.

Out for a day of fun with the new RZR and a great geocaching friend from North Carolina. Great camo, something that is hard to see when in plain sight. Tftf
