GC1FF4 Virtual Cache Castlewood Canyon
Type: Virtual | Size: Virtual Virtual | Difficulty: 2 out of 5 | Terrain: 2 out of 5

Castlewood Canyon is a state park. I tried to obtain permission to hide a traditional here but it was denied at the time. So a virtual was the best that I could do.

Depending upon how you do this, the terrain could be a 3. A difficulty of 2 was assigned because of the number of points. The altitude is about 6500 feet so it should be a year around Geocache.

Access to the park is about four miles south of Franktown on highway 83. There is a Visitor's Center there, and yes, there is a $5 fee for the day. Trail maps are available here. Please don't try to avoid the fee by parking along the road to the west. There is no parking except in designated parking areas. There is parking and restrooms near points #1 and #5. This is a beautiful park so if you see some trash, pack it out. The only trash I have seen so far, were two plastic water bottles. Stay on the designated trails. If a point is off of the trail, it is my fault, so please let me know.

This is a five point virtual Geocache, but the fifth point is optional.
Describe what you see at each waypoint. Saying that you saw a pile of rocks or a grove of trees is not quite what I have in mind.

Additional information on point 5: No matter what the GPS receiver says, don't attempt to climb the canyon wall. The receiver will probably loose satellite reception in this area. You should be within 30 feet of a notable object, so look around the cliff base. It can be seen and approached from the trail. For a quicker trip, hike points 1-4 and back, then drive to point 5.

Point 1: N39 20.011 W104 44.644
Point 2: N39 20.170 W104 44.593
Point 3: N39 20.235 W104 44.889
Point 4: N39 20.400 W104 45.383
Point 5: N39 21.102 W104 46.103 Optional

At first, I read that this is a 5 waypoint virtual and I almost decide that I'll save it for another day. I figure I might as well put the coordinates and it turns out that they are already spots that we are going to visit, how perfect.

What an icy day here in the canyon. Ryan and I had shared the set of micro spikes that I had and we were still slipping all over the place. It wasn't too bad once we finally made it down to the canyon level but getting there was quite the journey.

Visiting the waypoints was fun and it gave us a reason to stop and admire the views along the way. At one point, we both climbed under these large boulders and that was pretty cool as well. We only came across a hand few of people out there so it was very quite while walking around today.

This is a spot that I wouldn't mind revisiting when it warms up outside. I'll include a few pictures of our journey.

This was a great walk; my husband (a Muggle) and I had never been to Castlewood Canyon before, but this won't be our last visit. Just wish the yearly state parks passes weren't so expensive.

We had been to Durango and Great Sand Dunes for a mini-vacation, and on the spur of the moment stopped here because we weren't quite ready to be home yet. It was good weather for hiking and there were several people around, but not the mob I imagine gets here in season. I don't bound around on boulders like I used to, but the trail wasn't that hard and I finished without banging myself up too much. Winter is coming, but today was fun, and thanks for the interesting hike-cache!

This was a great geocaching day! While @WindAtMyBack was working in Parker, I decided to hit the trails looking for special caches... difficult, Earthcaches, Virtuals, highly favorited, and ones placed by my friends. The day ended with a mail call to pick up my new pathtags.
This was a very fun virtual, but now I'm tired! Answers sent. I saw a super cute juvenile fence lizard while out here.

Today was my first time to Castlewood Canyon State Park, so it was good to do some exploring while having the time to grab a few caches. I was happy to make the find on this one without any drama. Thanks to the CO for placing this virtual for everyone to find and keeping it going, TFTC.

It was a beautiful November morning for hiking and caching in Castlewood Canyon State Park. It was fun to see such an old virtual cache still alive, and we enjoyed the tour we got of the park by going to all 5 points. Answers have been sent to the CO. Thanks for the cache.

Found this one on the way in, note the day rate for the park has gone up to $7, still not bad if you make a day of it. TFTC

Thanks for the really fun virtual and tour of the south loop! Out on the trail today with CrumbCrunchers exploring the area. So pretty and so cool! Plugged in all the waypoints and made sure to admire the surrounding as we traveled. Pictures and notes taken at each location. Great fun and nice to see these oldies last! Thanks for putting this one together!
