The Schlessman Family Branch of the Denver Public Library opened on March 9, 2002, and it was designed by Michale Brendle. The architecture reflects the neighborhoods surrounding this library: brick represents Montclair, which had a small storefront library branch until Schlessman opened; metal represents the historic Lowry Air Force Base; and glass represents the new Lowry neighborhood. The Schlessman Family received the naming rights to the branch with their generous $1 million donation.

Lowry Air Force Base was named for Lt. Francis B. Lowry, who was killed in action in 1918 while serving as an aerial photographer for the U.S. Army Air Service. Lowry Air Force Base hosted air operations from 1938-1966. During World War II, Lowry fulfilled a critical need by training personnel for the U.S. military, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. During the 1950s, Lowry trained 1,000 missile specialists a year. Lowry closed in 1994 after graduating more than 1.1 million Armed Forces personnel.

The oldest structure still standing in Lowry is a private residence that was originally the Agnes C. Phipps Memorial Sanatorium. The sanatorium operated from 1904 to 1932, touting the curative properties of Colorado’s climate.

To find this geocache:

1. Go to the coordinates listed.

2. Come inside. Look for the Little Dipper constellation.

This constellation is a nod to the pilots who were trained at Lowry and who had to learn celestial navigation before radio and satellite navigation were invented.

3. Look around the constellation for a likely geocache spot. You do not need to enter any storage areas. The cache is accessible without moving anything.

This cache series would not be possible without the enthusiastic and supportive help of the staff at the Denver Public Library. Be sure to visit the other geocaches in this series and collect the special code at each final for future surprises. A bookmark of the other caches in this series can be found here.

Thanks Geocaching Colorado for the Geocache of the Month Award, as the first series to win!

After spending a lot of time in Texas during our 2018/2019/ winter/spring/turned summer RV trip in order to go to GeoWoodstock XVII we are now on our way N/NW and heading back home to Washington state. Stopped in this area for my muggle hubby to visit the air museum. And I got to walk around getting my steps for the day and collecting smilies! This is my first find in the Denver area, and actually in most of Colorado. I often don’t go for multis, but I had time today and this one looked fairly easy. And it was, especially with a point in the right direction from a friendly library volunteer! TFTC

I didn’t see any Little Dipper constellation, but it was easy enough to find by the title. I was surprised how many aviation details are in the architecture of this building.
