This is a FIVE part virtual cache. Enjoy this hunt in late spring, summer, and early fall of the year. Caution the road to the final cache may be closed in winter, but you can always snowshoe, snowmobile, or ride a horse…all at your own risk. To confirm your find, please e-mail me with a description of the cache.

THE BRIGHT PROMISE OF RUBY SILVER DREW 5000 PEOPLE TO THIS AREA IN 1879 FROM AS FAR AS ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND. LATER IT BECAME A GHOST TOWN WHEN SILVER WAS DEMONETIZED IN 1884.

Lewis An epidemic of scarlet fever swept the town in the summer of 1881. Miners, housewives, dance hall girls, and babies were struck down by the dreaded disease. I, helped to care for the sick until I, too, was stricken. I died here on that beautiful summer day at the age of seventeen. My broken hearted parents buried me in the little cemetery on the rocky hillside.

My good people as you pass by. As you are now so once was I. As I am now you soon must be, Prepare yourselves to follow me.

Who am I ?

Part one: Travel to the cache coordinates. It is very near Jack’s cabin. When you find the cache you will see that this man, who served in the Union Army, was from Ohio. Take the number of his Infantry Regiment and add 43 to fill in the 2 blanks below. Use the answer to find the coordinates for part two.

Part two: You found it! Good. Take the elevation and add 232 to fill in the blanks below. This will take you to the middle of an alley.

Part three: You are real close at this point. Watch for traffic and look to your south. Next question: What is the 2 story structure called that is about 40 feet away? Before this town got plumbing, many of these buildings existed. It has a upper, so you can enter during DEEP snows, and a lower door. Last time I looked, it was pink with white trim. This type of building is called a ?. See the Hint, if you need help…you city slicker. Now count the number of letters and fill in the blank to find the next cache.

Part four: Can you feel the presence of Butch Cassidy? I guess he has been long gone. But one day in that wild, Wild West, he checked his gun at the door of this saloon. But some no-count tipped off the local law. When the marshal entered the front door, Butch ran out the back door…and kept going…without his gun. The owners displayed the famous gun on the wall behind the bar for years. Several years ago they learned the worth of the prize and immediately put the gun in a safe deposit box.
What is the address of this saloon? Use this number minus 20 to find part five.

N38 51.023

Part five: Congratulations! Enjoy the views and the cache area. There is also a ghost town with a beautiful lake nearby for your viewing.

Hint: If you are from the city, you may need a hint for part three. Just like all good frontier men, the first thing you built was a cabin, but the second was a place to read the Sears catalog.

MerryMary and I are on a two-week vacation to Colorado to enjoy the fall colors -- taking photos, camping, hoteling, hiking, and 4-wheeling. Today was spent in the Gunnison and Crested Butte areas of Colorado. We stopped here to begin the search for this cache. Managed to find what we needed at Stages 1 and 2, and even 3, although it had a paint job. But when we got to Stage 4, we ended up scratching our heads. Something was wrong. Reverse-engineered the final location (which really is pretty easy to deduce without going through all the stages, but then you miss out on all the intermediates). Anyway, realized we were a BLOCK AWAY from where we needed to be, so we walked over there and sure enough, the location fit the description. We then made our way to the final location and it was easy to spot what we needed. Answer on the way. Thanks for the fun virtual, ejldixie and Felicia...

This was easily my favorite cache of the day and possibly my favorite virtual cache of all time. I think this is the first virtual that has taken me on an adventure. I can't believe it only has 7 favorite points. It will have one more today. Thanks for keeping it alive.

Its great to be back in the Gunnison Valley. I graduated from Western 15 years ago and I haven't been back here in 10 years. I forgot how great this area is. Even after living here for a number of years, the caches I visited today took me to some places I had never seen before.

I'm currently on a 12 day road trip from Indiana to Colorado and my goal is to get caches in as many counties along the way as I can. Thanks for the hide.

Amazing! Loved every bit of it. For future finders: what you're looking for in clue 3 has gotten a paint job (and now matches Teocalli Tamale). Thanks again!

Thanks, ejldixie. Took a drive to Crested Butte and back home today. Lovely scenery and got some more caches along the way. This was a great puzzle to follow around to all the different stages. Had been to the final location before but it was nice to visit it again.
