Sentry

RM Off Road Series (ORS) #5: Rampart Range Rd./Balanced Rock Rd./Mt. Herman Rd.

This cache is the last of eleven in my #5 series of off-road caches located along the Rampart Range/Mt. Herman route.  This route runs about 36 miles from Garden of the Gods ending in Monument with a 7 mile side trip to Balanced Rock.

Cache Information
You will reach this cache after you start on your way down Mt. Herman Road toward Monument.  This monolithic sentry looks like it is watching over the vast open area beyond.  Note: A hint is provided for this cache to keep folks from doing anything dangerous up on the rocks.

Trail Information

Rating/Description
The Rampart Range Road and Mt. Herman Road portions of this route are rated easy and can be done in almost any vehicle with decent ground clearance although an SUV, Truck or other off road vehicle is recommended.  There are sections of the trail that have minor erosion and Mt. Herman Road has some rocks.  If you decide to take the side trip to get the three caches up Balanced Rock Road, you will need better ground clearance and may want to have 4WD because the road is badly rutted.  Disclaimer: You need to decide for yourself if it is safe to make the trip in your vehicle.  Also note that rain and snow can change the road conditions considerably making it unsuitable for less equipped vehicles.

The trail starts just inside Garden of the Gods off of route 24 from Colorado Springs.  From there, you will stay on the wide easy Rampart Range Road until you cross Mt. Herman Road.  From there, you can either take Mt. Herman Road down to Monument, or keep going and turn on Balanced Rock Road.  If you do the Balanced Rock Road portion, you will backtrack to Mt. Herman Road and take it down to Monument.

Winter Months
This trail should be open in the winter, weather and snow conditions permitting.  I made this run around Christmas time last year and with the exception of a few icy sections, it was no problem.

Time/Distance
The Rampart Range and Mt. Herman portions of the trail are approximately 36 miles and should take about 3 to 5 hours driving time.  The round trip to Balanced Rock from the Rampart Range/Mt. Herman intersection is 7 miles and should take about 1 hour.  You will also need to include time for finding the caches, exploring, sight seeing, lunch, etc.

Out and about today - going to Divide the fun way to check out a brewery.

Almost gave up on this one (there IS a cold drink calling my name, after all! BigSmile), when I checked one... last... spot!

Success! TNLNSL. TFTC!

Wow! We have not been geocaching in the last couple of years except for a few finds here and there. Note to self: read the description better. TFTC! Great find! Took nothing, left nothing. Signed PB-N-JA

This was one of a handful of caches I found during my first time 4-wheeling in my new 4Runner. Had a great time and enjoyed finding this and another RM ORS cache - always fun to find ammo cans! Thanks!
My new, trusty steed did a great job!

benj59 took a day off of work to try and tackle a few caches down in the Palmer Lake area with me that we needed for our D/T grid amongst others that sounded fun in route.
Unsuccessful at Teamwork after spending over an hour to try and figure out how to climb to, we decided to throw in the towel. We did not have ropes and proper equipment with us for the previous cache plus it was out of our comfort zone so we headed down the trail to find a couple caches before heading to our next goal.
benj59 being the navigator as I was trying to avoid the rocks and potholes in my CAR down the road, stopped us here to find this cache. As he said, this looked easier than what it was. I would rate this one a 3.0 terrain or higher for "most" cachers. Our GPS's bounced around a bit and we struggled to find this one as quickly as we had hoped. Our perseverance paid off as I made the grab here. Surprised to see so many nice and new swag items in the cache. We signed the log as PayMe59. Thanks for a fun cache to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

With PayMeCache after a failed attempt at getting Teamwork up here. This looked easier than what it was. Only 100 feet off the road! Many options and coords a bit bouncy but we persevered and PayMeCache made the grab. Signed the log as PayMe59. Thanks for a
Beautiful spot to stop!!

Out with geohounds CJ & Ami as we did a few caches along the Mt. Herman road. Nice to find a regular ammo can at the final instead of the "too prolific" micro in the woods. TNLNSL, TFTC
