Trail Information

Rating/Description
The Rampart Range Road and Mt. Herman Road portions of this route are rated easy and can be done in almost any vehicle with decent ground clearance although an SUV, Truck or other off road vehicle is recommended. There are sections of the trail that have minor erosion and Mt. Herman Road has some rocks. If you decide to take the side trip to get the three caches up Balanced Rock Road, you will need better ground clearance and may want to have 4WD because the road is badly rutted. Disclaimer: You need to decide for yourself if it is safe to make the trip in your vehicle. Also note that rain and snow can change the road conditions considerably making it unsuitable for less equipped vehicles.

The trail starts just inside Garden of the Gods off of route 24 from Colorado Springs. From there, you will stay on the wide easy Rampart Range Road until you cross Mt. Herman Road. From there, you can either take Mt. Herman Road down to Monument, or keep going and turn on Balanced Rock Road. If you do the Balanced Rock Road portion, you will backtrack to Mt. Herman Road and take it down to Monument.

Winter Months
This trail should be open in the winter, weather and snow conditions permitting. I made this run around Christmas time last year and with the exception of a few icy sections, it was no problem.

Time/Distance
The Rampart Range and Mt. Herman portions of the trail are approximately 36 miles and should take about 3 to 5 hours driving time. The round trip to Balanced Rock from the Rampart Range/Mt. Herman intersection is 7 miles and should take about 1 hour. You will also need to include time for finding the caches, exploring, sight seeing, lunch, etc.

Just as I got to the Parking spot a light drizzle started. Of course! So I slipped & slid out to GZ. While I was searching a FS SUV and a wild land fire truck drove up the switch backs. Eventually I expanded my search about 35' up & found the large ammo can.
FYI this section of the road is always closed in the winter now from Garden of the Gods to Rampart Reservoir from sometime in Nov until March or April depending on snow.

I picked up this nice cache while on a short run down Rampart Range road. I was surprised last month to learn that this road closes in the winter, so I was glad to get the opportunity to come here day. I struggled to find this one as my GPS had me looking in the wrong spots. I found this one because I heard it before I saw it. One of the rocks slide off of it and made that distinctive metal sound, just as I was prepared to move on...as if it wanted to be found. I did not realize that something was out of the ordinary with this cache until I looked at the log and noticed that it had not been signed for a few years. Unfortunately, my Garmin does not show caches as being disabled. Once I got home, I saw all of the information in the logs.

I'll offer the following information to the CO in case something might be useful here as he determines how to proceed with the cache. At the very least, he does not need to come physically check on it. The container and log are still in great shape, fully serviceable, and hidden.

There are no posted signs near the parking coordinates, or anywhere near the cache; or anything to indicate that this area is closed. Farther down the road, closed areas are clearly marked or even fenced off, unlike this area. At the entrance (exit from Garden of the Gods), there is nothing posted about restrictions to foot traffic. I think this is significant because while I'm not sure if this area ever had a restricted sign, I know that some of these signs are coming down. I'm not trying to contradict what may be online (which I did not check), I'm only reporting what conditions are on the ground. The cache is a good 300 feet from the burn zone. The entire area between the cache and parking spot is undamaged. Given this state, I assume that this area either didn't need a sign or may not be in a true, intended closure area. I could see how when they made the map, they simply didn't include this untouched area and drew the closure area to touch Rampart Range road, a convenient boundary.

Hopefully the CO will find this information helpful and will save him a trip from having to physically come here to check on the cache. At the very least, I'm thrilled as I realize I now can add a 4year, 10 month "lonely" cache to my stats. Counting caches lonely for only one year or more, I know have 67 years, 7months from 39 caches in 11 States & Provinces.

Thanks to the CO for the placement, diligence in maintaining the cache and surrounding conditions, and keeping this old one alive; TFTC.

It looks like this area is closed at least until Oct of this year (http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd475683.pdf) and unfortunately the cache is still in the restricted area (see attache image, small cross hatch area is restricted.

Maybe next year!
