09/19/2018 By Denali41 Eleven years ago today Tahosa and I had an adventure together: we hiked to the location of Golgatha Cache and spent an hour searching for it before we finally reeled it in. It’s a toughie, and there has been only one “real” find on it since our September 19, 2007 recording: by icezebra11, who will likely be the second finder on “Tonka’s Placque Hunt”. Even though Tahosa and I had interacted prior to that hike 11 years ago at events and through correspondence, our full-day hike to Golgatha cemented a relationship that has held strongly through the intervening years and had led to some very interesting shared geocaching activities for both of us.
I was excited today when I returned home from my shoulder therapy exercises to see the publication of a new Tahosa and Sons cache! I had other plans for this afternoon, but immediately switched to trying for this cache as my single priority. I had become somewhat familiar with Soapstone Prairie Natural Area from past hikes, and hoped, from these past experiences, to narrow down the possible trails to the interpretive signs that needed attention. So I loaded my mountain bike and my backpack of first aid kit and water and other essentials in the vehicle and headed north. Sure enough, I was able to reduce the number of trail possibilities and made some bike rides and hikes to gather the needed information. It was fun getting back to Soapstone Prairie, as it’s a great area of human history and provides habitat to a number of special mammals, birds and plants. What is not yet recognized by any signs is the recent discovery of nesting by Baird’s Sparrows on Soapstone. The documentation of this species’ nesting here shows a disjunct breeding population more than 300 miles south of it’s previously known nesting range! There will certainly be added interpretive signs about this remarkable discovery, so perhaps this cache will become even more challenging in the future by adding another special dimension unique to Soapstone Prairie Natural Area!
Well, I gathered the information, made the necessary calculations, and still had some difficulty coming up with the final cache even though I was certain of my coordinates! I tried the correct spot and surroundings several times before actually getting it. Good job, Tahosa and Sons! I found the cache just as a significant lightning and thunderstorm appeared and worked its way around all sides of me. As I drove home, I was dumped on by a late-September downpour.
Now, about Tonka. Denali50's and my hearts go out to Tahosa’s son/family who had Tonka as a family member. We grieve all of our dogs that have passed: Wind Rivers Shoshone, Bridger’s Pride, Strawberry, Pepper, Pacer, Togwotee, Gambler, Denali, Teewinot. Each has held an incredibly special place in our hearts, especially Denali. We hope that our now-living dogs, Orizaba and Chimborazo, live long, exciting, and full lives, as we hope that Tonka did.
Finally, and of considerable excitement to me, the D/T rating combination for this cache (4.5/3.0) is one of four that I still need to complete the entire Fizzy Grid (the Difficulty/Terrain Matrix) with FTFs. After this one, I have just three more combinations to go. Those three will certainly take several more years, but I’m closing in on this long-term goal.
Thanks for this great memorial cache. I’m happy to record the {FTF} on it.
