One of the traditions of baseball.
Where My Pitches At
The cache is not hidden at these coordinates. To find it you must solve the puzzle at the end of the story. Good luck and enjoy.
Whether you’re watching a major league baseball game at home or cheering on your kid at Little League, chances are you’re going to see players with one cheek bulging with sunflower seeds. You’re definitely going to see some spitting from time to time. But just why do baseball players love sunflower seeds so much?
Well, first of all, they’re delicious. That goes without saying, right? But sunflower seeds are actually a relatively recent addition to America’s pastime. When baseball first got started in the 1800s, most gentlemen chewed tobacco while they played. Sure, they liked the tobacco, but it also helped them keep their mouths moist on the dusty fields. Back in those days, dugouts had dirt floors, so spitting a line of tobacco on the ground wasn’t a huge deal.
But as time passed, people became more aware of the harmful effects of chewing tobacco. Many said baseball players set a bad example for kids with their chaw. Plus, the introduction of concrete floors in dugouts meant that after just one game, they became a spotted, brown mess. Something had to give.
During the 1950s and ‘60s, some major league players started keeping a handful of sunflower seeds in their pocket instead of a plug of chew in their cheek. Their popularity grew over time until by the 1980s they had outstripped tobacco in its on-field popularity. According to legend, some players could chew up to a bag of seeds per half-inning! Of course, then the fans wanted to get in on the delicious seed action, so many vendors now hurl bags of seeds through the air along with peanuts and crackerjack.
If you or your Little Leaguer are eating seeds while playing baseball, remember to keep it safe. Don’t eat seeds while running, as there’s a chance you could choke on the seeds. If you’re in the dugout, try to spit your seeds into a container so it’s easier to clean up after the game. But most of all, remember to have fun. By chomping on seeds during a ball game, you’re taking part in one of baseball’s oldest traditions.
