Cowboy had been working on a ranch north of Durango all summer busting cows out of the brush. Now it was time to move on. He packed the mule with all his belongings, tied her to his horse and headed home. He decided try to cut some miles off the trip by taking the trail over the La Plata Mountains. Cowboy was trying to cross a narrow ledge of a steep cliff near along the Dolores River. The mule slipped and fell down the side of the cliff into the river. She got out of the water, but all Cowboy's belongings were washed away in the rapids. Now Cowboy had nothing except his horse and saddlebags.
Cowboy was able to get a little money by selling off a few McPhee jewels he had picked up around the river banks. He needed food for his ranch pantry in the worst way. He was down to his last bit of coffee, a handful of beans and some dried jerky.. Cowboy rode into Cortez to stock up on supplies at the mercantile store before heading home. This was a trip Cowboy would rather forget.
