History:

In 1874, the signing of the Brunot Treaty with the Ute Indians opened the San Juans to settlement. While building a toll road in 1874, Enos Hotchkiss discovered a gold mine near Lake San Cristobal. The mine was later named the Golden Fleece. As prospectors came to the area more mines were discovered in the Lake San Cristobal area.

Lake Shore was established on Lake San Cristobal to serve the area mines. Lake Shore had 75 residents and a post office from 1896-1904. Today, Lake Shore is series of cabins and the ruins of the Golden Fleece mine.

Please take some time to reflect back on the lives of these pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state!!

Ha! I guess I should have read a few more logs. Got to site and was immediately consumed with fear that cache would be gone as there are no longer any tree branches within reach. Sat back in car to try and pull up website when I noticed something obvious and suspicious. Yep, there she was. Quick sign of the log and then off to dinner. Thanks.
