The cache is hidden 300 feet up in elevation and about .18 miles from the parking lot. A lot like climbing up a blue run at a ski area (because that's exactly what it is)! The elevation of the parking lot is 11,315 ft and the cache is at 11,615 ft! The views are fantastic! The Continental Divide goes through Berthoud Pass off Highway 40 in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. The idea of a high point that divides watersheds is intriguing. You spit on the eastern side and it ends up in the Atlantic Ocean, spit on the western side and it ends up in the Pacific Ocean! Berthoud Pass was once home to the now-defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area which first opened in 1937 and boasted the first ski lift in Colorado. It closed in 2002 but now has a warming hut for travelers and hikers of the Continental Divide Trail. The cache is probably not accessible in the snow, at least not without snow shoes and a shovel!
The cache is a green ammo box dedicated to the great state of Colorado. It is a privilege to live here! Please take time to enjoy the view and please sign the log book. The original contents of the cache contained all "colorado-themed" merchandise, we periodically clean it out and add more Colorado stuff.
