SBS - Something Evil #3


When caching, your GPSr might be providing street distance, but once you're out of the car, your distance typically will be "as the crow flies". A typical crow flies at between 16mph and 19mph, and the typical person walks about 3mph. So even if the cache is out on the "flat and level", the typical crow will beat you to that FTF every time!

Here are some "as the crow flies" distances between Estes Park and many famous cities around the globe. A crow could never make the trip, but a typical trans-oceanic airliner will put up some impressive speed numbers. 600mph of ground speed isn't at all unusual.

Just looking at these gives me jet lag. I've flown to a few of these cities, and have always found eastbound travel the hardest on my system. I wake up the first day and my body just sorta wonders what happened. The 2nd day it realizes that somebody has played a bad joke on it, and the 2nd day is always the hardest.

The hide for this puzzle is not evil (1.5). The puzzle itself, however...

I’m proud to say that I needed no help with the puzzle ... but I feel a little guilty because I sure didn’t solve the puzzle. Something in the description led me right to ground zero and it was pretty straight-forward from there. Thanks for the interesting challenge!

I've been looking at this one on and off for several years before coming to Estes on our annual visit to see the elk and aspens. Finally figured out the right solution technique, but still couldn't get past the checker so I asked the owner for a little help. Got what I needed, made my way to the cache site, and found the cache in fairly short order. Giving this one a favorite point for the interesting and challenging puzzle. TFTC!

Needed some help from the CO to guide me in the right direction as well as finally get the coord checker to give me the green light. Saw the skull on the approach, and the cache is still in good shape despite the last find being about 1.5 years ago. Thanks for the fun puzzle cache!

I've been saving this one for when the road closes so I wouldn't need to go so far. It was a beautiful day today, so I thought I'd go get it before it snows later this week (hopefully). I needed a little bit of help with the puzzle, but eventually I got the geochecker to agree with me. Tough puzzle! Found the container easily enough, although it needs new camo tape. I should have thought to bring some with me, but forgot. Let me know if you want me to pop up there and replace it. Thanks!

YEA!!! I'd worked on the puzzle off and on, and kept going down the wrong path, so asked the CO for some help, which was forthcoming. After a bit of figuring, and adjusting, I got geochecker happiness on the third try. CO confirmed I was correct, too. Drove up to Estes Park this morning, just a bit of a sprinkle here and there to keep things cool and damp. No problems finding the 'skull', and had the cache in had in a few moments, as it was in plain sight. The camo tape on the container has seen much better days, and is flaking off, but I had no spare tape with me. Inside was nice and dry, but I removed a Hershey's chocolate that someone had left. Looks like someone signed the log in May 2015, but didn't log it on-line. SL and returned to it's spot, and hid it better than when I found it. Thanks for a good puzzle!
