Recommended for kids  Takes less than an hour  Scenic view  Not Available during winter

A very easy grab with some of the most beautiful scenery the Colorado Rocky Mountains have to offer.
The Mustache Cache was made in honor of the train conducters who helped blaze the trail westward shrinking the American frontier.  We noticed a severe lack of Geocaches along  hwy 160 and was especially surprised that none had been placed on Old Veta Pass.  When you drive down hwy 160 a sign is visible to the Old Veta Pass road.  This cache has been placed with the permission of the landowners who typically live on the pass year round.  The cache is located in a ghost town that served as a main railroad stop in the 1800s for travelers headed west and also to transport the logs that were harvested on the mountain.  The town, which has been renamed UPTOP by the owners since 2000, has a hotel, stable area, train depot and an old little chapel.  The cache contains several different items and as always we request that you take something and leave something.  At the request of the landowners, it would be nice if the exchange is something red or a bell, you'll understand why when you find the cache.  I strongly suggest to anyone seeking this Geocache to plan on spending some time in the old town to explore a unique time of American history.  The views will take your breath away and there is an abundance of wildlife to see.  The road to the town that is to the east is windy but not difficult to travel.  Another road that will take you there is further west just past Paradise Acres and is less windy, but you'll miss out on much of the views this Cache was placed for you to experience.  In the winter, the east entrance is mostly unpassable, but the west is usually kept plowed, though four wheel drive is strongly suggested in the cold months.  Enjoy

Very interesting. Love this area. Wish we had more time to explore. The buildings are in such good condition. It does take time to take it all in. The only “red” thing I had was a pen for the next cacher. Left a pathtag & TB if you these -please log them. His gets a favorite from me TFTC

I detoured over Old La Veta Pass just for this cache, and boy am I glad I did. Words can't even describe how cool this place is. How does this not have more favorite points? The road is easily navigable by regular passenger cars. No high clearance or 4-wheel drive is needed. Of course it may be different in winter. I spent the better part of an hour just wandering around, taking photos, meditating, and enjoying the mountain scenery. I'm so glad the recent forest fire stopped a short distance from here. The cache was an easy find even though my phone was pointing about 40 feet away. The cache is in good condition, but unfortunately the listed travel bug is missing. Thank you A&HGilkeson for placing this cache and bringing me to this spot today.
