I love all the trails in the Jeffco Open Space Parks, but sometimes getting off the beaten path will help you find some pretty cool stuff. If you take the easy route, you won't see what I mean. If you take the bushwhacking route, you'll find some cool rock formations, a mini-canyon, and the bedding spot for deer.
While looking for the perfect spot to put a cache in this area, I did a lot of off-trail exploring. I did some scrambling up rocks you can see from the road, but the trails all miss; I went crashing through the underbrush and discovered a nice shady spot where deer like to sleep; I found the beginning of Rattlesnake Gulch and a great place to avoid during a heavy rainstorm; I remembered why long pants are better than shorts while crashing through the underbrush and that yucca plants hurt when they stick you in the leg; and I eventually discovered a nice place to put a cache.
You can access this cache from either the Rattlesnake Gulch TH off of Deer Creek Canyon Road (which will give you the bushwhacking experience), or you can take the Meadowlark Trail from the Deer Creek Canyon Park parking area. If you come from the Meadowlark Trail, please be conscious of all the little barrel cacti on your way to the cache.
The cache is a clear plastic tupperware container with a few toys, the log book, and a special prize for the FTF. I hope that people take the Rattlesnake Gulch trail to find this cache, and go for the bushwhacking experience, but I'll understand if you don't.
Congratulations to Quigman for the FTF!
