We are in for a double feature astronomical event on the night of August 30-31, 2023–a pair of supermoons culminating in a rare blue moon!  That’s a “Super Blue Moon” event! Blue moons occur when two full moons occur in the same month.  In August 2023 we experienced the first full moon on the 1st, so the one on the 30th is the blue moon night.  Supermoons occur when the moon is “close” to the Earth, and on the night of the 30th the moon will be a scant 222,043 miles distant, its perigree (its closest distance to the Earth in its entire orbit path). This supermoon event will be 30% brighter than normal full moons. The last time two full supermoons graced our skies was in 2018.  It won’t happen again until 2038.

Get out and observe the blue/supermoon event by taking the kids and dogs and friends (or just yourself) for a walk along the Spring Creek Trail starting at the listed coordinates in the parking lot at the eastern end of Edora Park. Start at the spot marked by a pair of reflector tacks.  Bring a strong light to make the reflectors shine more brightly than the moon does and find your way eastward along the trail following the reflectors. The last reflector placed on a trail rail post is positioned soon before the trail swings sharply to the left.  At this point the next reflectors (three at the same point) are at a considerable distance and not along the trail as the previous glint-producers have been. So search ahead carefully for the three, that mark the end of the reflector series.  The cache container is located in a tree hollow on the east side of the triple-reflector tree host.  Use your light to search for it in its resting place.

Enjoy the SuperBlue Moon if you happen out on the night of the 30/31st.  Beyond that date, simply enjoy the night cache series!

Up early this morning for a Wellington cache run. It’s amazing that there are peeps on this trail at 5:00 am. Luckily they were using their lights. A quick find that brings back memories of NM, Kingbee is famous for this container. Thanks for the hide.

Thanks for another awesome night multi, Denali. I'd hoped for a "multi multi" two-find night since I'd completed all but the last stage of the nearby UTM UV multi cache. But still no luck with that difficult final. Probably daylight will be better than dusk Grin Luckily I gave up in time to narrowly beat Dud & Tamara to this cache for {FTF}!

It was great fun meeting with fellow cachers and almost getting hit by unlit bicyclists. Thanks for this well made cache and for the invitation to get away from city lights & enjoy walking under this beautiful moon!

Once in a blue moon… you just are not fast enough. Got to this one when the sun was setting and has a lovely walk to GZ. Never really had a single question on direction as this was marked really really well. As we were hunting Tangleforge came up and say hiya fellow geocachers.

As we where hunting tangle walked off… we should have known we were bested. But they were so considerate to let us have the fun of coming up with the find to discover that for ourselves. It’s an absolute pleasure to get beaten by someone such as them! It’s an absolute pleasure to find such a nice night cache. It’s an amazing night with an amazing view of the moon. Can’t help but give it a favorite point for the blue moon experience all around.

Thanks for a great cache and experience here. Everything is in perfect shape of course. It will remain memorable even if we weren’t the FTF this time. Congrats tangleforge! And of course a big thank you for this one. SL

Excellent fun, Denali41! What a fun walk and on a beautiful night!

We were about 5 minutes too late on the FTF but it was a pleasure to meet you and share a nice walk back to the parking lot, Tangleforge!

I truly enjoyed this one and the moon is definitely a rare sight tonight. Get outside and enjoy!

TFTC ??
