This is an EarthCache. There is no physical cache to find. Logging an EarthCache requires that Geocachers undertake an educational task relating to the specific Earth Science at the site. If you don't want to answer the questions, don't log this EarthCache.

To log this Cache as a Find do the following within 48 Hours after or even better before your log:

Email the answers to the questions; do NOT post the answers or spoilers in your log. Logs that give away the answers or are unaccompanied by an email with the answers will be deleted.

  1. In the subject line write 'GC62AY6 Royal Arch'
  2. The number of individuals in your group
  3. Which type of stone is the arch mainly made of?
  4. What is growing almost right in the middle of the Arch?
  5. Estimate the length of the arch´s Base.
  6. (Suggested, not required) While at the Arch (NOT at the trailhead) take a photo of you and your GPSr, showing something in the background that makes it clear you're there

The Royal Arch is one of the most popular sights of the Chataqua Trailhead. The hike is not very long, but has some steep parts. If you are from sea level like me, you should definately bring enough water. There is 20% less oxygen here.

To get to the coordinates, follow the road from the 'Entrance'-trailhead to the Bluebell Shelter (about 0.5 miles). Near the shelter you will find the 'Royal Arch trail'. Follow it. When you reach the top, you are near the arch, but the trail still goes down and up again (0.25 miles, about 15 Minutes).

My friend Ryan was in town for 2 more full days, so today I wanted to bring him up to Boulder to experience one of the well known hikes in the area.

We arrived earlier in the day and I was surprised that there were so many people out and about with it being a Monday. Nonetheless, we were able to find nearby parking and the lot was actually free because it was off season, can't complain about that.

We started on the trail and had an easy time for the beginning of it, that was all until we reached were the actual incline started to hit. Boy did this get icy fast, I'm glad that I had brought my set of spikes with me or we might have had to turn around. With the one pair I had, we split them between the both of us and made due with what we had. Even with the added bonus of one spiked shoe, this hike still had us sliding all around. It was like one foot was completely useless, a very strange feeling. At one point, we rested before the small descent portion to the arch and a Dalmatian walked up towards me, it's not very often you see a hiking Dalmatian so I greeted it and wondered where it's owner was. Shortly after, a man came up very short of breath and seemed to be chasing after the dog. It turns out that both the dog and man we're deaf and he would later explain this to me after being reunited with his dog. Very friendly guy and a very unique pair to come across out here.

After quite a bit of struggling, the arch finally presented itself and we were both thoroughly impressed. This was Ryan's first time being in Colorado and he seemed to really like this area. We took some time sitting atop the rock that was under the arch and just enjoyed the spectacular view ahead of us.

Going back down was twice as hard as coming up, we were sliding everywhere. At one point, we decided to just sit down and slide down a portion of the trial and I'm sure that was a site to see. Surprisingly, we both walked away from this one relatively clean and thankfully without any sprains or scraps. Well worth the risk.

I have rented a campervan for 24 days to go geocaching and exploring around the western part of the US.

This weekend a friend of mine flew in to Denver from Seattle to join me for the weekend in Rocky Mountains Nationalpark and Boulder. It was such an amazingly beautiful area!! Trail Ridge Road was unfortunately closed this weekend, due to snow, but Estes Park was absolutely worth the visit itself. We really enjoyed our time here, and I was lucky to also find some nice geocaches. Thank you to all CO’s for placing them.

About this cache:
What an amazing hike!!! Unfortunately I have no fp to give, but this one deserves one. I absolutely loved the hike, the views and the arch. Answers has been emailed, and I’m attaching a photo of me and one of my friends at the Arch.

Amazing hike to get here. Spent some time with the chipmunks at the top, enjoying the view. A little hazy from the CA wildfires, but still beautiful. TFTC

Second day on our CO trip. Drove out from Denver and took the hike up to the Royal Arch just before 9am. A nice trek up in the beautiful weather today. We timed it nicely and only had a handful of friendlies at the top. By the time we were heading down there were much more people heading up and I’m guessing it could get pretty crowded at the top. Got to sit right along the edge and admire the fantastic views . Was surprised at the number of dogs along the trail , of all shapes and sizes. Loved the arch . Had to go to the front desk after our hike to ask the enthusiastic old ranger at the front desk about the type of stone , and he was very excited to look up the answer for me. He also had a fantastic mustache . Thanks for creating this great EC for us to enjoy. Answers sent. This one gets a favorite point from me.

Its 7:30am on a Saturday and lo and behold we're actually one of the few vehicles in the lot as we approach parking.

As we make our way around the perimeter both of our breaths start to quicken, demonstrating our at sea level roots. Once we met the Bluebell hut, I had to ascend with only my long sleeve top and ski pants for the hike.

The biggest message drilled in to my brain: those yak trax would have done wonders for the route today, (so much ice!). We were determined to make it, slipping & sliding the whole way, but the grandiose arch was worth it...along with the view!

Discovered this Earthcache after a hike up the hills. Never realized that an arch such as this existed so close to home. Enjoyed the hike to share the cache with my son xxBriGuyxx on his 300th find. And I have the cuts and scrapes to prove it. But that's part of geocaching, they will go away. Memory of the day will last forever.
