When in downtown Denver you must check out the Denver Mint. After all, it ranks in the top 10 places to visit by tourists visiting Denver (according to the Mint themselves). It really is a very interesting place. It holds a place on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Denver Historic Register. The building is designed after the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, Italy. The Grand Hallway is breathtaking (again, according to the Mint themselves). The only way to see it is to arrange for a free tour, but in order to do so you will need to plan ahead as there are many rules to follow, and several blackout periods - but it is worth the trouble. The tour covers the present state of coin manufacturing and the history of the Mint. Usually you will be able to see the machines pounding out coinage used to supply the entire western half of the United States with billions of coins annually. The Philadelphia Mint supplies the eastern half.

To claim the cache you do not need to arrange a free tour. You simply need to locate the iron gate that would keep you out of the tour area when the Mint is closed and e-mail me how many pointy iron pickets are on the gate.

If you are fortunate enough to take the tour, please share your favorite part.

I was a little disappointed that the Mint was closed today for the 4th of July weekend, but we walked around in the area and enjoyed the buildings anyway. TFTC

My mother made me get up at 6:30 to try to get a tour... and they had one slot open for the latest tour, and we have to go to the airport. So that’s fun. Nice little wake up call.

Heading downtown to visit the Botanic Garden and made a quick side trip to grab this cache. I think the last time I was here was about 42 years ago when I was 10. We took the tour then, wish I could remember more about it. Thanks for putting the effort into this virtual cache. Answers sent.
