Sheephorn Memorial Cemetery is a remote cemetery on Sheephorn creek about 1/4 mile south of the Grand County line in Eagle County. It has about 35 memorials in it. Most are from the early 1900's to about 1950ish, but there are a couple more recent burials. The cemetery land is owned by Eagle County. Please respect the surrounding property owners as the cemetery itself is surrounded by private land. The cache is approximately 60' outside of the cemetery gates on BLM land in a Pinyon tree.
Make sure you download info before you go... there is NO CELL SERVICE in the area, nor for most of the area surrounding. The closest "destination" to this is Radium which is really just a campground and river access. From Kremmling or State Bridge, take the "Trough Road" which is also CR 11 in Eagle County or CR 1 in Grand County. Head towards Radium! You are looking for Sheephorn Rd No.40 or Forest Service Road 401, or CR 11S (all the same road). If coming from State Bridge, it is about 1/10th of a mile BEFORE the Radium turnoff just after you cross Sheephorn Creek. If coming from Kremmling, go past the Radium turn off and go straight off the next corner before crossing Sheephorn Creek! The cemetery is 2.3 miles up this road. It is 1.4 miles PAST the Cottonwood road intersection -- stay left at this intersection. The cemetery is on top of a hill on the LEFT side of the road. Watch for a black sign with white writing that says "Sheephorn Memorial Cemetery". Make a sharp turn onto the cemetery road and go up the hill. The entire county/forest service road from the Trough road is in good shape, as is the road up to the cemetery -- accessible even by the family car!
There are at least 5 other active caches within a short distance of the Trough Road, so pack a lunch and plan an afternoon of fun!
! The Exciting Cache Series!
“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”
REMEMBER:
If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.
The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.
If you are interested in being a part of this project, contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of “Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mountain Passage”. Use the ‘Send Message” link at the center of the page of their profile.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them.
The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task and will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.
After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.
Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.
