Go Wild Blue U!

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is home to the Fighting Falcons. Among cadets, graduates, and local residents, it goes by many names, including The Zoo, The Blue Zoo, and Wild Blue U (the name of this cache). It is located on an 18,455 acre campus north of Colorado Springs, Colorado. About 4000 students, called cadets, make up the Cadet Wing. The Academy motto is: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.

The Air Force Academy is the newest of the five U.S. service academies. The first class graduated in 1959 and the first females graduated in 1980. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science in their field of study and a commission as a Second Lieutenant. USAFA graduates include 41 Rhodes Scholars, 403 general officers, 1 Medal of Honor recipient, 39 astronauts, numerous All-American athletes, and 164 graduates who were killed in combat.

The Air Force Academy has played an important part in the lives of the cache owners. gampa is a 1975 graduate, gamma and gampa met while he was a cadet (and married a year after he graduated), and both of our sons-in-law are Academy graduates.
