Welcome to the Grand Mesa! This multi-cache will take you around the Visitor's Center and you'll learn a bit!

Remember, you likely won't have service here so make sure you download the app and use the geocache waypoints or google maps to get to each stage of this multi-cache.

Stage 1:

The first stage will bring you to two signs in front of the Grand Mesa Visitors Center. You will see a plaque on a rock and a map to the right of the plaque. You will use the information on these two signs to get your next waypoint.

-To find N coordinates:

Start with N 39°0 _ . _ _ _'

To find the first blank, look at the plaque. The national forest is part of the battlement mesa forest reserve set aside by President Harrison on Christmas Eve of a certain year. What is the last number in that year? That will be your first blank.

To find the last three blanks, add 302 to the number of years that this plaque is in commemoration for.

-To find the W coordinates:

Start with W 107°_ _ . _ _ _'

Move to the map on your right. To find the first 2 blanks, look at the index to topographic maps. Find Long Point. Look at the number on it. Minus 1909 from that number.

To find the last 3 blanks, find Grand Mesa. Take that number, and minus 1777.

Now you will have the coordinates to move to the next stage.

Stage 2:

This will take you to where the cache is hidden.

-To find the N coordinates:

Start with N 39° 0 _ . _ _ _ '

To find the first blank, look at the Spruce Beetle Removal Project Map. How many cottonwood lakes are pictured on that map? That will be your first number.

To find the last 3 blanks, look at the evidence of infestation. Counting from 0 and going to 5, left to right up to down, change each item to the number. Take the number of these in this order for your last three blanks.

Pale Green Needles, Woodpecker Bark Flakes, Boring Dust.

-To find the W coordinates:

Start with W 107° 59 . _ 0 _ '

To find the first blank, look at the why trees are cut sign. In the first paragraph, how many times was 'Spruce' written?

To find the last blank, look at the Spruce Beetle Removal Project Map. Find the highway that runs through the National Forest. Subtract 57 from that number.

Now you will have the coordinates to where the cache is hidden!

Enjoy the area and respect your surroundings and other people. To get away from the tourists a bit, be sure to make it to the Young's Creek Resevoir Cache as well.

Welcome to the Grand Mesa!

We had a good time with the clues! Crossing the highway is a little sketchy, but the clues are well done. TFTC!

Took three visits (checking final coordinates in between) before I spotted this one, but coordinates were good and the puzzle was fun. Tftc!

What a relief to finally find a multi cache that’s actually doable. We are still relatively new to this and all the ones that we have tried are borderline impossible without an engineering degree. But not this one! Great clues, fun scavenger hunt, and beautiful (if not a little mosquito-y) hiding place. Fun way to end our geocaching day. Took little trophy, left a couple little toys and ducks. TFTC!
