This is one of a series of caches that are associated with the local history.
The building across the street is currently called the “Avalon Theater”, the brick portion was built in 1922 by Walter Walker, publisher of the local newspaper many among other Achaemenes. Opera singer Lucy Gates played on opening night Jan. 5, 1923.
The original building was built in the Colonial Revival style by Mountjoy and Frewen from Denver, and the architect was Frank W. Frewen. Sometime in the late 1920’s, the Avalon was taken over by the Rex Amusement Company which was also owner the Majestic Theater. The Cooper Foundation began operations in 1943 and purchased the building in 1945. The building underwent major renovations in 1947 to the Art Moderne style by the Cooper Theater Foundation, the probable architect being Duane Conner from Oklahoma (whose resume included a description of the renovation). The “Cooper” as it was locally known was closed in 1989 along with Mesa Theater and Chief Drive In after Carmike 7 Cinemas opened. In 1990 the City of Grand Junction took over the building for back taxes.
After about 8 years of fund raising and planning, the building was again renovated in 2014 to what you see now with the addition of the glass and metal attachment to the original structure. The facade is reconstructed to the original design.
