!! Exciting New Cache Series!!

“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado.  This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other ‘Spirit Quest’ group.  Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task.  It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people.  This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers  willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

If you are interested in joining the “Walking Through History Clan” contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of “Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mo untain Passage”.  Use the ‘Send Message” link at the center of the page of their profile.

Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

REMEMBER:

If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.

The cache container is a 35mm film canister.  You will not need to enter the cemetery to find the cache.

This cemetery contains about 60 headstones.  It appears to be uncared for.   The oldest marker I saw was for 1888 which matches the establishment date on the gate.   This location has the feel of a prairie cemetery more than some of the others in the area.

There is no access to this cemetery directly from I-70.  Come in from the north to get here.  You will probably need a high clearance/4WD vehicle even if there have been no recent rains.   We found some soft spots in the road.   If there have been recent rains or you do not feel comfaortable driving down the dirt track, park on the county road immediately north of the cemetery at N39 17.275 W103 22.760 and walk the 0.5 miles to the cemetery

On a second day of a geocaching adventure with Spartacus Geodog on the Eastern Plains. After a night in Flagler, doing some more caching on the way home. This was quite a surprise access road. I felt like I was in an old Western movie going to the pioneer cemetery. Thanks for the placement, Grand High Pobah!

Been trying to get here for 3+ years, but weather hasn’t cooperated. Finally got here in late December on a beautiful day. There were tons of tumbleweeds in the cemetery. We paid our respects and then picked up the cache. Thank you for bringing us here.

Today we were on a "quest" to complete the requirement for the Colorado Spirit Quest Challenge---101 CSQ caches. We headed east of Colorado Springs to avoid any leftover snow from the weekend. We always enjoy exploring this part of Colorado and discovering the variety of cemeteries it holds. We had a few DNFs but also replaced a few containers that were truly missing. Most containers were in good shape with dry logs. Thanks to all the COs for placing and maintaining their caches and providing the history for each of the cemeteries.

We looked at GZ and in the surrounding area for the original container but only found the throw-down mentioned by a previous cacher. Signed that log and replaced as found.

If it hadn't been for the waymark I would have flown right by this one. Saw the break and some tire tracks and decided what the heck. I probably should have read the description a little closer, but that wouldn't have stopped me. I drove my last car all kinds of places I shouldn't have, my new car may as well get used to it! I really got a giggle out of the "Bovina" Cemetery being in the middle of a cow field. My phone was jumping all over the place, so I checked lots of potential spots with no luck. After 20-30 minutes of searching and getting my arms all poked up by the thick grass, I decided to put a replacement out. I really try not to do that and I'll see if I to stop by on the way back to give it another look. TFTC - #1687.

I rarely get a weekend to myself, so I decided to make a run for Mingo. I'm only 20 caches or so of completing a "cemetery" challenge, so I broke up the drive finding a few of those. Had fun on the drive over, watching the windmills turn and sighting antelope and jackrabbits. Even got some new counties to boot!
