Native American Tribe Series.
Cayuse

Of the Waiilatpuan language stock, the Cayuse tribe were originally located in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington state. They call themselves the Tetawken, which means "we, the people." The tribe was always closely associated with the neighboring Nez Percé and Walla Walla, and was regarded by the early explorers and writers as belonging to the same stock. However, they were linguistically independent. The Cayuse were noted for their bravery and as being skilled horsemen, often using their horse-riding prowess to intimidate other tribes.

The tribe acquired wide notoriety in the early days of the white settlement of the territory. In 1838 a mission was established among the Cayuse by Marcus Whitman at the site of the present town of Whitman, Washington. In 1847 smallpox carried off a large part of the tribe and the Cayuse, believing the missionaries to be the cause, attacked them, murdering Whitman and a number of others. and destroyed the mission. The event is referred to as the Whitman Massacre which led to the Cayuse War. After the battles raged for seven years, the Cayuse were defeated and moved to the Umatilla Reservation in 1855. By the turn of the century, their number was estimated at about 400, but all were of mixed blood and their language was extinct.

Today, the Cayuse tribe shares a reservation in northeastern Oregon with the Umatilla and the Walla Walla tribes as part of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

Today I had an extraordinary idea. After work I headed up north to grab as many caches as possible. My goal was 50 and I ended up with 80. Pretty good, but it took all evening. I didn't return home until 11:55 pm and worked the next day at 7:00 am. Oh well, life of a geocacher. During my travels I saw a few hawks or eagles (too far away for me to identify), prairie dogs, many song birds, two pronghorns, a raccoon, and a special treat. I'm pretty sure I saw a badger. It had a similar shape to a raccoon, but looked like a blonde skunk. It had a white stripe between it's eyes instead of a black stripe like a raccoon. I also saw my first of the season rattlesnake. It was crossing the road. It wasn't bothered by me and I didn't bother it. The day began northeast of Barr Lake and ended up all the way down in Deer Trail. My FJ is racking up a lot of miles in the name of geocaching.
Emptied some water out of the container. But the log was nice and dry in the baggie. TFTC!

I am visiting my daughter again here in this great state, and I just had to go on a power run once more. Thank you to all of the CO's that placed these caches out here. I certainly love visiting these remote areas as one can only wonder the stories of these places from long ago. I found this one in good shape. TFTC

I decided to do another run at some eastern plains caching today and managed to find 71. It was a beautiful, quiet and dusty, day for caching. I made the find here at 10:16 am. Thanks for the cache!

We're on a trip from Michigan to see some the western states. We've been to Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Theodor Roosevelt National Park, the Badlands, Montana, Yellowstone, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. We dropped pathtags where we could. This was one of our stops while we were moseying along in Colorado. It was 101 degrees today. TFTC
