Log only Micro. Please sign log and post pictures of the valley to the south to track the progress of the swarm.Avant Nuee (tranlated from french; Before the Swarm)
This cache was placed during my yearly maintenance run to my cache on top of Red Cone Mountain. I've thought this road needed another cache and had a micro container that I found in the "Swarm" cache (GC1AX40). The swarm cache contained several spawn containers to be placed with reference to the original. It is a log only micro for the time being.
Perhaps one of the most significant "swarms" effecting our local area is that of Dendroctonus ponderosae, or the Pine Bark Beetle. This insect bores into the bark of our native ponderosa pines and cuts off the water supply just underneath the bark, killing the tree. A visit to our high country will quickly show the enormous effect these small insects are having. Large sections of forest have died leaving standing trees that blanket the hillsides in red color.
I was, however, very happy to see that as of my visit to this area on 7/27/08 there was little evidence of the beetles on the south side of Red Cone and the Hall Valley, despite the overwhelming impact just on the other side of the devide. Hopefully, the beetles will not cross and leave this area green, but if they do I hope this cache can be a monument to what it was like "before the swarm".
Please take a picture looking south from the cache spot when you visit to help me cronical the effects of the beetle on our forests.
