We backpacked up here today and set up camp near the cabin ruins. After a delicious Mountain Home dinner of chicken and dumplings, I headed across the creek to try to find this cache which had not been found in over two years. It was more difficult to get to than I had anticipated, mostly because I took an unnecessary route through some tall vegetation. But the coordinates were very accurate and I found the remnants of this cache scattered about, not too far from where my GPS receiver was leading me. All that remains is the black plastic container bottom, the orange squirt gun, and pieces of the clear plastic lid that has become the most deteriorated over the years. I signed part of the lid with my pen since there was no paper log... and adding one would have been a futile attempt. Everything went back into a hole under the largest bolder in the immediate vicinity. But, as previously mentioned, this cache needs to be replaced with a better container if it is going to stay active.
Pics attached. TFTC!

We made the hike, then scrambled to the cache, which is not right off the trail, that's for sure. What we found was a sorry mess. The bottom of the container was full of water and mud, the top nearby. A very muddy squirt gun was in the bottom. We cleaned it out as best we could, and put a piece of paper for a log in a large plastic shopping bag, the only plastic we had. While I am glad to have had a cache on this long difficult hike to the lakes, this one either needs an ammo box or needs to be archived. Visiting from PA and enjoying these mountains!

Could not find either new or old cache. Found described location under large boulder. Know that cache,s are not allowed in wilderness areas. Possible removal for this reason. Continued on to upper lake area. This should be done by experinced horse back riders only. Local resident. Would like to know if cache has been removed.

I, and my 3 teenage sons, enjoyed this find--the ammo box. What great scenery and a nice hike. Found Freddy the Fish, Timone, a toy car, a cell phone case and other misc items in the box. Thanks! Found at 13:30.

On the way up to Venable lakes today, we stopped and found our way across the creek and over to the cache area. After searching for quite awhile in the great rockslide, we finally found the original cache. Didn't see the ammobox. Thanks!

Made the Trek to the lake today but there was WAY too much water in the creek to cross at this time. We were wishing the cache was on the trail side.
Wonderful views up there.

Stream was running pretty strong to cross and weather was moving in after visiting Venable Lake, catching and frying a trout - did not spend the time to find a crossing. Thanks though - beautiful area and views.

This cache requires a 5-mile hike to near timberline. I replaced the damaged cache on 8/21/08. The coordinates changed slightly, but my eTrex GPS was acting a bit squirrelly. The new cache is a metal ammo can and it should be fairly safe from weather, varmits, etc. The cache is placed in a talus slope of fairly large boulders across the stream from the Venable cabin.
