One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a 1962 novel written by Ken Kesey (1935 - 2001), a La Junta, Colorado native. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital,  the narrative serves as a study of the institutional processes and the human mind in reaction to those processes. Additionally, the novel offers a critque of behaviorism while celebrating humanistic principles. The plot revolves around the power struggle between inmate Randle Patrick McMurphy, and the head administrative nurse, Mildred Ratched. Ratched rules the ward with an iron fist and with little medical oversight. The book’s release in 1962 coincided with growing changes to psychology, psychiatry, and the growing deinstitutionalization movement; which still has health and political implications today. Despite its increasing obscurity, the novel has established a number of tropes that are common in contemporary literature and film.  Time Magazine included the work in its "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005" list. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's 200 "best-loved novels." The novel was adapted into a 1963 play, starring Kirk Douglas but is best known for the 1975 film adaptation starring Jack Nicholson. The film went on to win five Academy Awards.

Despite its critical acclaim, the work is considered one of America's most highly challenged and banned novels. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest  is ranked 49 on the American Library Association list of top 100 challenged books in the United States (meaning attempts to get it banned). Reasons for this status varies; but some have cited the edgy content, provocative language, and direct tackling of sensitive social issues.

Cache Overview

This is a 3 stage (posted, stage 2, final) multi-cache. An actual “to standard” multi-cache…no puzzles, no tricks, or (clutch the pearls) no special tools that might drive you crazy. Please note the listed attributes. BYOP.

The posted coordinates will take you to the starting point where you will begin the hunt. There are a number of parking and route options to get to the posted coordinates. The posted parking coordinates provide one option that places your vehicle in a location where local traffic and residents are the least likely to drive you crazy.

The cache design intended for the hardest hide to come first, followed by progressively easier hides at stage 2 and the final. I wouldn’t want to drive you crazy by having geocachers invest the effort to find the first two stages, only to DNF at the end. Be prepared for some GPS degradation at stage 2. There are no easy answers, so don’t go crazy. Good luck on the hunt.

How do you turn a short walk into an hour and a half? Take a 7 year old boy to a cache that has a huge ravine and a creek flowing through!! I'm never one to stifle the imagination and adventure of a little boy, and truthfully i'm still one at heart, so we got muddy, wet, and covered in all sorts of plant matter! I can't post videos but Jude even pretended to be a velociraptor from Jurassic Park through the willow. Darn good impression I must say! We ever so slowly made our way to the beautifully crafted and placed final. Jude spotted it and made the retrieval. Signed and stamped and replaced as found. Almost equally slow return and we checked out a few more things. Even found an odd array of various skulls! So weird! Eventually we found our way back to the lake and took another very slow tour. This is where we discovered there are fish and salamanders here. We checked out the water inlets a other various structures. We'll be back with Penny for sure!!

I was so close the first time out! I found myself again finishing job #2 tonight around 21:30 and the night air was calling my name. So I pulled up a couple nearby and this was close so I decided to try again. With the distraction of the youth gone I was better able to focus on things around me. Of course I spent way too much time looking in all the wrong spots. I even sorta made friends with a little mouse. I named him prebbles! Lol! He was busy and hopping around and I was busy too. An idea struck me in the kinda what would I do here way. A second later stage one in hand. Well played sir! Armed with stage 2's location I was very hesitant so late at night armed only with a flashlight and the mosquitos were keen to my location. I know the critters at home have been aching for an adventure and I thought I would save it for later but wanted to check out the terrain. Well after a minute, stage 2 was in hand! I like these. I had a cool one in Palmer Park that someone stole, bummer nice hides can't last forever. Well with the final coords in the map, I called it quits. Far enough away over unknown terrain at night I figured I'd play it safe. Kiddos will likely enjoy the walk during the day. Till next time.... stay tuned! I can only imagine what adventure will come of this with kiddos in tow!

I enjoyed Ken Kesey's book and the movie may even be better than the book, which is rarely the case in my humble opinion ;-) So intrigued by the title and write up, I headed out after this one today. It is very well done at all 3 stages with good hides and creative containers thus deserving of favorite point. Thanks to K Trackers for creating it! All is well at each stage. TFTH!!!

FTF!

More after lunch ....and a short ........

I pulled up the cache page and looked at the pictures first and got a chuckle out of they were thinking or saying.

Then Read the rest of the cache page and was shocked to see and actual straight forward multi with no field s or altoids cans to steal.

I had a few things to do first thing in the morning, so I got one those “second to find” type of starts to head out to look for this one.

Got to parking and noticed a new pond with people fishing around the edges.

As I approached posted coordinates I had thoughts about posting a DNF or Not if no one is around to see me looking, I could just pretend that I was not here. “ plan B”

After looking for a while and no one else around I was getting close to executing “plan B”

Wait a minute, no way, that’s it.

Traveled to the next way point and with no one around “plan B “ was still an option on the table.

Like the cache page says it gets easier as you go.

Got to the final and was really surprised to see a blank log.

Thanks for a very fun in town multi to hunt for!
