This EarthCache is located at a pull off and parking area on the north side of Colorado Highway 14.

Glaciers carved out many of the wide valleys located in the Rocky Mountains. West of this location, the narrow V-shape of the lower Poudre Canyon shifts to the wider U-shape of the glacially carved upper canyon.

The flat area where you are parked is the moraine left over from the retreat of the last glacier to pass through the valley. A good view of the material found in this moraine can be seen in the unsorted rock material of the road cut to the south. This material also makes up the low hill to the north of the parking area. This moraine contains the clay soils, sands, and gravels of the rocks ground up by the glacier, as well as larger cobbles and boulders. These larger rocks may contain scratches or striations from being forced against other rocks.

Had a great time visiting and caching through the Poudre Canyon today. Everything had a just washed look to it.

Answers sent to the CO. Thanks for an excuse to pull out at a point of interest on the road!

Having a fun day with the fam in the mountains. Drove up the poudre to chambers lake, went across the Laramie river road To bull mountain, then home on sand creek and Cherokee park road. We made lots of stops to enjoy the area and for a couple of caches for me. Tftc.

I wandered from Kimball Nebraska to Eagle Colorado today and never was on interstate. In fact I drove about 70 miles on dirt road, or I should say muddy road as it rained lightly for most of the day. Along the way I found 38 caches including my first cache in five different counties. I now have found a cache in all counties in Wyoming, my fifth complete county state.
I really did notice a change in the valley as I headed upstream.

12:32 PM Today we left Pueblo headed to Steamboat Springs along CO-14 to pick up a few DeLorme grids and two counties. I love earthcaches. I appreciate learning about the geological history. Answers sent. This also lights up DeLorme grid 19 for me.
