Learn a little bit of local history and find a cache, all in one trip!
Congratulations to the "B" Team for their 30th FTF!
The Melvin School is a public landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The cache owners have obtained permission to place the cache here; however, cachers should be aware that it is technically located on school property, albeit a good distance from the high school and middle school buildings.
Mrs. E. Seligmann attended both of the schools on either side of the Melvin School, and is a member of the Cherry Creek Valley Historical Society, which maintains the Melvin School as a museum.
HISTORY:
MELVIN SCHOOL
Built: 1922 • Landmarked: 1986
This two-room schoolhouse originally served the outlying community of Melvin and was one of the founding schools in the Cherry Creek School District. In 1949, the structure was moved to make way for the Cherry Creek Reservoir. After 17 years of use as a tavern (The Emerald Isle!), the Cherry Creek Valley Historical Society moved the school to its current location on the grounds of Smoky Hill High School. The building is owned and maintained by the Cherry Creek School District.
