This cache is located about five miles south of the town of Crawford. There is parking on the shoulder and the cache can be accessed from Clear Fork Road. There is no need to go into the school house area. Here is a brief history of the Maher School House:
The areas surrounding Maher, lower Black Mesa, and Clear Fork all had young children that needed to attend school. However, to travel to Crawford was unfeasible during the time period. In 1884 a meeting was held in Maher to establish a school district there. All 25 in attendance voted in favor of the notion. As it was too far for students to walk to school, most came on horseback or by covered wagon. Once a student had graduated the 8th grade, they were required to pay tuition in Crawford if they desired to attend the higher grades.
From the cache site, take a look towards the rear of the school. The two small buildings served as the Boy’s and Girl’s outhouses as there was no indoor plumbing! At present day, the school house is used for community events and meetings. However, some local residents have begun the grant process to seek and acquire funding to restore the school house to its historic state.
Happy Hunting!
Congrats to BG2015 on the FTF!
