A small magnetic cache on the grounds of the Pioneer Village museum. The geocache is probably only accessable during museum hours (10AM to 4PM, Wednesday through Sunday).
I was originally going to place a geocache at the nearby Winter Festival site, but there already is one at the hillside that used to have a ski jump (Horace's First Run - GC6319V). There is an exhibit about Carl Howellson, the father of skiing in Colorado, at the museum. It was Howellson that started the Winter Festival in Hot Sulphur Springs, before moving on to Steamboat Springs, where an olympic training hill bears his name.
The Winter Festival was held on nearby Bungalow Hill, just a few blocks west of the museum, from 1912 to 1937. At least 3 other ski hils were developed around Hot Sulphur Springs, but the popularity of West Portal (precursor to Winter Park), followed by Winter Park, which opened in 1939, sealed their fate as "Lost Ski Areas." However, Hot Sulphur Springs was, and will always be, the first "Winter Sports Capital" of Colorado.
