Where the Red Pine Grows

Beaver Creek. Take Trail Gulch N/NE for about 4 miles of trail that parallels a dry stream bed.
Just outside of Canon City (Hwy 50) intersects with Hwy 67. Take 67 North, east on CR123, then an immediate left (North) on CR132. This will be a maintained road for about 8 miles, but you will have to navigate some ruts the remaining three to get to the Beaver Creek trailhead, which is a large turnabout (coordinates N38.34.240/W105.00.735). No vehicles beyond this point.

Plan on an 8-mile roundtrip and about 5 hours of some rugged trail criss-crossing a dry creek bed with an elevation gain from 6,100 to 7,740 feet.

From the trailhead, take the Trail Gulch path. Markers: about ¾ mile you will pass through an old ranch gate. Near the 1.4-mile mark you will pass through a quartz garden. At about 2.5 miles you will reach a 4x4 post denoting a fork in the road. Before moving on to the right, take note of the old electric power pole just to the East of the path – last providing power in 1966. Another half mile you will see an unusual tree with a huge knot. After another mile you will find a grove of mossy rocks, which will be a nice place to rest before the final trek to the cache.
You will begin to notice a change in terrain. After the 4-mile point, you will have to rely on your coordinates to locate the blue ammo can. We placed some nice items in the cache for the effort.

Beginning inventory:
Can opener, sewing kit x2, ice scrapper, dog bandanna, bungee cord x2, Blues Clues Adventure cd, Jumpstart 1st grade deluxe cd, 1st Grade Around the World cd, Star Wars Dark Forces cd, USAF Academy address book, Cadoo Brain game, dog collar flashing light, Spiro the Dragon mini game, Sponge Bob, recorder, Fantastic Four – The Thing, USAF cloth name tapes x2, USAF Good Conduct ribbons x2, USAF SrA chevrons x5, water tattoos x2 chain door lock, lock and key, Rosemary, assorted pens and pencils and other goodies. Please use the log for your visit. We also left a camera in the ammo can for pictures of successful adventurers. Please let us know what you think of our treasure (ammo can) cache.

I wanted to hike back in here a few years ago and never put it together until this morning chasing two new hides back in here.

Gabbed this one on the way back down to parking.

Wonderful fall morning for a hike back in here.

Thanks for a fun container to find!

WOW. What can I say about this awesome trail to this cache. At the start it was easy to follow but after we reached the half way point the trail was pretty hard to follow or it just went right up the stream. We crossed the stream at least 20 times so my shoes got wet but that was OK because I had on a pair of my OLD hiking boots so it didn't really matter. I have been wanting to get this cache for a LONG time. I didn't check my time going up but it was almost exactly 2 hours back to the parking lot. Cache is in GREAT shape considering it was last found on 10/21/2012 almost 5 years ago!! I took a few pictures that I will be adding to my log. Container is FULL of swag. Favorite for sure. Thanks for bringing us up here. Signed the log and now the long hike back to the truck. [8d][8d] SL TFTC TNLN

Decent hike to this spot way back up in a network of valleys. There was still some fall colors along the way, one willow tree was on fire with bright yellow color! The trail was decent all the way up seeing that one of us wore flip flops! See photo in Colorado Columbines find. Thanks.

Well, gotta say things have change in the 7 year period since this cache was placed. First, the 4x4 post with the sign denoting a fork in the trail has been moved to about 2.1 miles (and the trail going to the left is closed or non existent), so don't try to look for the old power line pole until the 2.5 miles down(or up) the trail; there is evidence of having that 4x4 post and sign at 2.5 mile point, but who knows why it got placed down the trail???. We came across 2 patches of great mossy rocks, so we got 2 breaks to marvel at this wondrous dry creek bed canyon. Never saw the tree with a huge knot, but did see some of the most spectacular trees growing in most unusual and brave places; such as a HUGE blue spruce high up on a cliff face. The difficulty rating is appropriate, however, taken with a grain of salt since one of us hiked this 8.2 mile hike in flip flops!! we posted a picture since the camera in the cache was all out of pictures.

A very enjoyable hike on Christmas Eve day. And I have to say that I prefer the terrain on a trail frequented by horses than by motorbikes. No sign of any wildlife on the entire hike…although I wonder about the fluffy, fresh squirrel tail we saw attached to a signpost – what happened to the rest of him! TFTC.

The hike through the gulch was a great way to spend Christmas Eve. Estes01 and I logged a little over 8 miles round trip from parking. The trail is in great shape and is suitable for foot travel or horses. Although we saw evidence of horses having recently passed, we didn't see any horses. It was odd though - the signpost for the powerline trail had been turned 90 degrees by the time we returned to that point, and a sacrificial squirrel tail had been stapled to a signpost near the trailhead while we were out. We expected to hear banjos dueling in the woods at any moment. Excellent cache and well worth the effort to get there. Thank you!
