When I was caching with n0wae on Fathers Day 2005, he mentioned that doing resections to find a cache would be a different way of hiding them. Well there have been several of these resection caches done and this cache will be another one in the ongoing saga of hiding caches that need a map and compass as a component of caching. Its a level 5 for Terrain because I 4 wheeled in. But you can walk and make it a 4.5.
Once there was a Jeepin Cacher who departed his trusty jeep to look for the elusive cache in the back country. Where the air is thin and the trees aplenty.

He was standing on a ridge casting bearings (resections) to determine his whereabouts. He saw three hills X's in the distance and took a cast with his Old Fashioned (Magnetic),compass. The line flew in a straight and orderly manner and landed on each of those elusive X's.

Location of X's

  1. X 17 = X___ + ___ + ___ + ___ + ___ = 17
    1. Bearing 310.5°
    2. Distance .55 mi.
  2. X 24 = X___ + ___ + ___ + ___ = 24
    1. Bearing 232°
    2. Distance .91 mi.
  3. X 12 = X___ + ___ +___ +___ + ____ = 12
    1. Bearing 164.6°
    2. Distance .57 mi.

Now find where nOwae was caching in the woods with his trusty compass and you will find the cache box that will lure you to this hidden place.

Team Laxson did all the heavy lifting on this one, but our team all gets to take credit for I suppose since we were in on the ‘final assault’ of the hill. It was a very fun weekend to camp near this hide and being able to hike up and get this one was frosting on the cake. Thanks to Team Laxson, Takes the Hard Way and KingJR for an exquisite mountaintop experience! Great view from this location - thanks for the cache!

I usually load my GPS with caches before trips but for some reason I didn't do it this time....so I had no clue we were close to a cache. Team Laxson, KingJR, Picture Liberty and I were camping near by when some mentioned going to look for the cache. Team Laxson did all the hard work to figure out the coordinates for the final location....but we all made the hike to find it! Nice little workout in preparation for our hike the next day to the top of Wes White Pine.
Thanks for the cache!

This log is over 12 years in waiting. Back in September of 2005, Tahosa placed the cache 'The Old Ranch.' I was quick to project and solve that one, but took a year before I was able to make it to GZ, a month after this cache was published. I DNF'd that day. Tahosa had already confirmed my projection was close, but I needed more time at GZ than I had. Back then, I must have printed out this cache listing and solved for it too.

Fast foward to 2010 and I received a invitation to join Denali41 and Red Ruby to go to Old Flowers. Being my vehicle wouldn't make it, I jumped at the chance and found The Old Ranch.

Now it's 2018 and I was prepping for a camping trip and stumbled across and old file folder with a slide rule, print outs from NatGeo, and a few cache pages. This being one of them. Coordinates written down. Date printed? August 10th, 2006. Back then I assume I was thinking the final might be near the Old Ranch, hoping for a 'two-fer'. Once solved it was clear this find was for another day.

That day was today. June 22nd 2018. After meeting with with KingJR, Takes the Hard Way, and PictureLiberty in Masonville, we drove out to a beautiful campsite near the final location. While a short trail, the years have not made the road any easier. We got a fire going, made some coals, prepped the dutch oven for a wonderful dinner of Apricot Chicken Curry, then took off for GZ. KingJR had found this back in 2006 so we were hoping he could help if needed. Huffed up to GZ and made the quick find. 3 years since the last find, and everything is still in great shape.

Considering the long history with this cache, the adventures with friends on a beautiful weekend, the food, the friendship, and the memories, I have to say it just doesn't get better than this.

Signed in, replaced, and left a bit of firewood at camp for the next seekers.

This was one of my favorite caches ever! I used it as a teaching tool for my girls. They learned about compasses, bearings, magnetic and true, etc. Awesome! We were out staying at a friend's cabin so that gave us the opportunity to get this one. I had to hike all the way in though, since I was in my minivan. Anyone reading this in the future wondering whether you could drive in with your 2WD, the road isn't too bad for about half the way, then it's crazy bad! Anyway, my log entry was the first in the book since June 2013. I always think it's neat to find a lonely cache like that. Thanks very much for the great hide!

Last found over 2 1/2 years ago and only the second time in over 5 years. Wow, the LPC'ers don't know what they are missing. Pennock Pass is open now so I drove up this morning and parked at the posted coordinates. Decided to hike to where my mapwork showed I needed to go. When I plotted it out my 3 bearings converged nicely so I figured I was going to be close. Well, I was wrong. For some reason I was nearly 100 feet off. Fortunately I had printed off the photos from the cache page and after about 20 minutes of searching I found the well hidden box. I opened it up so the contents could get a little sunlight after 2 1/2 years. Everything was nice and dry. TNLN Thanks for the great backcountry cache Joe!

Well, duh! Couldn't find this on the first try and had to come back - my coords were off a bit, but the cache was in my search area, just didn't look close enough in the right place. I knew it had to be around/on that Tahosa feature! Also didn't realize that there were photos on the cache page - if I had noticed them the first time I wouldn't have had to return. Oh, well, it was another nice day in the mountains, so no problem there. Thanks for another great cache in a fine location!

My puppy Teewinot led the way up the ridge as darkness settled onto us--and all the time I was thinking that my resection triangulation coordinates better be right on, since it was getting dark and it might be tough to find this box in the light of my headlamp. Presto--my coordinates were just 31 feet off and we found the cache quickly. Relief! Headlamp came on to sign the log and to find our way back down to the jeep road and down that slick icy stretch back to the Blazer. A successful conclusion to a long day in the hills that began with the fun event at Cold Hard Cache in The Hills and included hiking up five Ranked Peaks. Thanks, Tahosa, for organizing the beginning of my day (the event) and its end (this great cache).

It is nice to finally have the smiley for this one. I hadn't even looked at it for a couple of months, so I was getting kinda nervous on the way up, wondering if I had forgotten anything important. To my great pleasure, it was sitting there, just waiting for us, and the GPSr said I was only 50 feet off or so. There seemed to be a few more roads than on any of the maps I had seen, and I started up the wrong way, but quickly realized the error. Anyway, another great cache! TFTC!!

Greengineer and I found this around noon today, although we solved it last Spring. It was a little chilly but good hiking weather. We're really glad we brought our yaktrax; it looks as if the snow that stopped Cameltrekor melted and refroze and made for a very icy section of trail. Anyhow yesterday we broke a sway rod trying to drive up, so today we gave in and parked at the bottom. It made for a nice hike, although the trail confused us a bit. Thanks for another fun cache!
