GC4G464 Unknown Cache Cannons!
Type: Mystery | Size: Micro Micro | Difficulty: 3.5 out of 5 | Terrain: 3 out of 5

Country: United States | State: Colorado
Coordinates: N38° 47.423 W104° 54.223 | Last updated: 08/30/2019 | Fav points: 0

The above coordinates are NOT the location of the cache but may be not too far from a good place to park.

A cannon at UTM 13S E 512414, N 4305564 fired a cannon ball at 30 degrees angle of elevation with a muzzle velocity of 300 meters/second in a direction of 115 degrees.

At the exact location in which that cannon ball landed and exploded another cannon was immediately wheeled into position.

Note: The final three numbers of the UTM easting coordinate for where the first cannon ball landed and the second cannon were placed are 608 and the final two numbers of the UTM northing coordinate are 10. If your answer is slightly different than this due to calculation differences, adjust your answer using these final numbers before proceeding to the next step.

The second cannon fired at an angle of elevation in order to achieve maximal range and in a direction of 217 degrees. That cannon ball reached a peak altitude of 4000 meters before landing.

At the exact location in which that cannon ball landed and exploded – you guessed it! - another cannon was immediately wheeled into position.

Note: The final threee numbers of the UTM easting coordinate for where the second cannon ball landed and the third cannon were placed are 990 and the final two numbers of the UTM northing coordinate are 46. If your answer is slightly different than this due to calculation differences, adjust your answer using these final numbers before proceeding to the next step.

The third cannon fired in a direction of 295.48 degrees at 70 degrees angle of elevation. That cannon ball stayed in the air for 35.26 seconds before landing in some rocks and not exploding.

Can you find the location where the third cannon ball landed?

Note: The final three numbers of the UTM easting coordinate for where the third and final cannon ball landed are 984 and the final three numbers of the UTM northing coordinate are 402.

Calculations: For the calculations, I used UTM coordinates, and after each individual calculation for time, velocity, gravity or distance, the result was rounded to two decimal positions, e.g. 259.80762 becomes 259.81 and 280.142 becomes 280.14. Trigometric functions were used and weren’t rounded. Acceleration due to gravity equals -9.81 m/s^2 (1/2 times 9.81 equals 4.905 which rounds to 4.91). Only the final answer for each of the three shots was then rounded to the nearest meter. Disregard effects of air friction on projectile, changes in topographical elevations, etc.

Disclaimer: Despite the use of cannons and high explosive shells, no life or structures were damaged or destroyed in the making of this cache.

There is a fire ring right at GZ so I was a little worried that muggles might have gotten to it. Fortunately I had just enough signal to pull up the spoiler photo. Great container as always and no worries about this one being found accidentally. TFTC

I really enjoyed this one. It brought back memories of my physics class but took me awhile to recall some formulas! The hike in was nice today and the container gave me a good laugh!
Overall, one of my favorites!
Thanks

When this cache was published I had just solved a very similar one in Huntsville. I pulled up my spreadsheet for that cache and used the same process to solve this puzzle. I had the solution in my had in very short order. Flash forward a year and I finally decided to go find it. I parked up at Old Stage Road & Gold Camp Road and I walked down the old RR grade. The Grade was easy, but it was a 5.5 mile journey to the cache, all down hill. I like walking uphill 1st knowing that I can always turn around if I get too tired. Today, I knew I was going to have a loooong up hill walk back to the car. Needless to say I was very tired once I got back. It been awhile since I have found a ColoradoPaul cache and once I saw the container I recalled all of your other unique containers. Once again I was surprised! Thanks for the puzzle!

Time may or may not be running out to do this one, but I didn't want to take a chance, and so I humbly admit that I got some help solving it. It didn't disappoint. I love all ColoradoPaul caches, no matter where they are....always the extra time and effort put into the containers, the puzzle and the placement. It would be hard to resist going after his caches no matter where in the world they were located! Thanks for some truly memorable caches...oh, the container is in great shape...just glad I had the strength to deal with it. A favorite, of course.

It looks like it may have rained just a little out this way. (LOL)

Very fun hide to find!

Thanks for the placement!
