Local Area Summit seldom visited. Great Views!
An adventure type cache. Short distance but HUGE elevation gain. You'll need 2-3 hours for this one. But take 1/2 day, a pic nic, and explore around up top. Got Oxygen ?This cache is on the summit of Cheeseman Mountain. There is NO TRAIL. You will have to route find. However...I'll give one good tip. Drive FR211 up towards Cheeseman lake. shortly before the intersection for the lake and FR211, there is a designated parking spot on the right (big brown "P" with a cable and pipe fence [ N39.14.271--W105.17.020]). Park / Start from here. Accross the road from the parking spot is a yellow "boiler plate" sign saying "no vehicles". Look at the hill climb before you. Head for the highest rocks you can see on the right. Then follow your GPS from there.
There are two peaks for this mountain relitively close together. The cache is on the high peak. No climbing aids needed. Bring lots of water, clothes for weather changes, a camera and binoculars. GREAT 360* views of Pikes Peak, surrounding mountains, Cheeseman Res., Cheeseman Canyon, and the Hayman burn area.
Awesome spelunking around the summit areas. It looks like just a burned out mountain, but the beauty of it up there is worth the sweating! You'll gain about 900 feet in 3/4-1 mile to the cache.
$5 bill for FTF to get a cold one after!
Additional Waypoints CM30FA4 - FR 211 Cheeseman Mnt. Parking N 39° 14.271 W 105° 17.020 Designated FR 211 Parking Area. Probably closest parking to the cache.
12/05/2017 By Back Country Horsemen After cutting our Christmas tree up the road I had my eye on making the climb to this one. We decided to park at the road junction as it seemed that was the highest spot & would help reduce the elevation gain. We started up a small ravine but ended up on the ridge trying to reduce the number of downed trees to step over. We finally gained the southern point of the rocky ridge and worked our way up & up. The views were fantastic &!the weather was close to perfect in the mid 30s with dry ground. It took us just over an hour to reach the top & after looking for the cache I finally found it 10' from where my huggle dropped his coat! I took the TB & left a beaded snowflake. All together it took us just over 2 hours.
12/02/2014 By trailmon Parked at the TH for the Cheesman Lake trail 200 yds. from Cheesman Lake. Hiked the trail toward the dam past the switchbacks then another 200 yds or so until a draw climbed to the east where we left the trail headed ENE and gained the ridge. From there it was a ridge walk to the top of Cheesman Mt. but we did skirt around the false summit on the way. Windy day, but in the 50's, a good day for a December hike. Signed the log, with the wrong date, I learned later. TNLN. Wanted to do this one for a long time, great to finally get up there. Thanks for a great hike and views. With ddneil and cfagern.
09/13/2014 By ernie66 Estes01 and I hiked up here from the south directly from The Shreds. It wasn't too bad along the ridgetop, but there is plenty of yucca and burned logs to step over. The view from the top is spectacular. Thanks for placing this cache!
09/13/2014 By estes01 Well it started out as a pleasant hike to GC4D1H7 "The Shreds" – nice trail with beautiful views overlooking Cheesman Lake. There was a little bushwhacking involved getting to that cache, but the real fun started after we left it and headed up to Cheesman. Our route, of course, was the long/wrong way to approach this cache. I thought to myself that this was the kind of hike Adrenalin Junkie would enjoy (no trail, lots of yucca and thorny bushes, loose rocks on steep terrain over a thousand fallen trees and limbs). I now see that he's already done it. We had a little difficulty finding the cache, but ernie66 finally came up with it. It's in good shape. We decided to take the easier route down…much, much easier. Thanks for the adventure.
