The burro has been an integral part of South Park's culture since the miners first began prospecting with these faithful companions. Miners would load the trusty pack animals with gear and head up into the Mosquito Range in search of their mineral of choice. After mining declined in South Park, many burros were abandoned and by the mid-20th century there was a pack of wild burros roaming between Fairplay and Alma. The burro is honored through multiple monuments in Fairplay and during the annual pack burro racing event known as Burro Days.

This cache is a quick park and grab where you might get a chance to spot a burro. Park on Castello Avenue or 2nd Street and look for a burro in the nearby field. Please respect private property and only view burros from the street.

TFTC so many cute goats on the way to the cache.

No burros today, but we saw and heard a large group of goats. They had some cute little ones. Noted the elevation in an earlier log; glad there was a reason one of us was huffing and puffing on the walk over from downtown.
