On Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at about 10:45am, wildfire was reported on Buffalo Mountain near Silverthorne. By 11 am the Mesa Cortina and Wildernest area north of Twenty Grand Road had been placed under mandatory evacuation orders. By Tuesday night the fire was estimated at 100 acres in size, with 0 percent containment.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 1384 residences were in the mandatory evacuation area, and another 1160 households were under pre-evacuation notices.

Officials credited the creation of "fuel breaks" over the years preceeding the fire for preventing the spread of the fire into residential areas.
The incident commander reported that the fire was human-caused, but did not have definitive information about the cause of the fire. Evacuation orders were lifted by Thursday afternoon.
