What exactly is the difference between a rock and boulder?

Definitions vary slightly, but it appears that the geologic description of a boulder is a detached rock measuring at least 10.1 inches (25.6 cm) diameter.

(Less scientifically, a landscaping source indicates that a rock that you can carry in 2 hands is considered a stone and a rock that you can carry with 2 fingers is a pebble.)

These should be boulders that everyone is comfortable with.

{*FTF*} at 6:47am. We love getting out early for hikes in the beautiful areas here in Colorado Springs. Today was perfect after the fresh rain last night. This area of town is one of our favorites.

We stepped over rocks, tripped on stones, scattered pebbles and grunted our way over boulders to get to GZ. The title of the cache immediately brought a smile once we discovered the hidey-hole. Happy to sign an empty log and replace all as found.

Thanks to Kerewin0430 for providing an excuse to hike in this area again. Favorite point for scenery and container!
