Meeker Home Museum is open for touring from mid-April through mid-October, Tuesdays through Saturdays, (but you will be able to answer the cache questions without a tour).
The Meeker Home is free admission to individuals, and small groups under 9 people.
The tour only takes about 30 minutes - highly recommended.

UPDATE 1-1-05... Hours of operation may have changed to Wed-Fri 1pm-4pm (winter hours??), you may want to call ahead to check if they are open if you want the tour.
Nathan Meeker, the agricultural editor for the New York Tribune, envisioned an idea of a Union Colony, a cooperative farming community, in the West. He gathered people with trades, professions and enough wealth to survive the initial hardships of the frontier.

Meeker's goal was to establish an agricultural colony that would become a model for settling the remainder of the territory. The backing for Nathan Meeker's Union Colony came from Horace Greeley.

In April 1870 the first Union Colonists arrived via railway cars to settle the land purchased by the company. Within one year the venture was a huge success. In 1871 the town boasted a population of 1,500, 36 miles of irrigation canals, beautiful homes, businesses and land under cultivation.

Meeker said the "highest ambition of a family should be to have a comfortable, and if possible, an elegant home." He built this home in 1870. It is filled with many Meeker family belongings and furnishings of the 19th century.

In 1878, Nathan Meeker was appointed Indian Agent on the White River Ute Reservation. Incapable of being an Indian Agent or dealing with Indian people, Nathan Meeker and all of his staff were killed in the gruesome White River Massacre in 1879.

Along the sidewalk in front of the home are historical markers that detail more of the history of Greeley.
The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Greeley Historic Register.

The home became Greeley's first museum when it was purchased by the City in 1929 and opened as the Meeker Memorial Museum. In 1959 it was renovated into an historic house museum and underwent another renovation and restoration in 1995.

Day 1 of an epic 6 day journey out to the western frontier. I had some vacation time that I needed to burn up by the end of the year, and what better way to use it than to go Geocaching! My main goal was to find caches in New Mexico and Nevada, which would complete my map in the western US. The rest of the 4 remaining states are on the East Coast. Secondary goals were to find oldies, mostly virtuals, and high favorited caches. The only bad part of the trip was that it rained every single day of my vacation.

I headed south out of MN on Sunday and returned home on Friday.
Sunday - Drive all the way through to Colorado (15 hours!)
Monday - Cache in and around Denver and Colorado Springs
Tuesday - Head south towards GC19 and then west through Wolf Creek Pass
Wednesday - Four Corners monument and west towards Nevada
Thursday - After a night in Richfield, UT, head east through the skiing areas of Colorado towards Nebraska
Friday - The long drive home

Thanks to all the cache owners for placing these caches for me to find and for keeping the oldies going all these years. Thanks for the cool virtual!

Our Colorado vacation continued today with a drive from Estes Park to Ft Collins. Enjoyed a nice short stop here. A dude was sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the house, but didn't seem to notice us. Answers are on the way. TFTC!

The coordinates seem to be a bit off here as they placed me at the wrong end of the block, but that may have had something to do with question number 2. In any case my answers will be on their way shortly; nice job and TFTC!
