This spot marks the what once was the entrance to the Gladstone Coal Mine which was operational from 1890 to 1915.  There are several relics of that bi-gone era that surround you here. From the rail road rail that was driven into the ground to mark the spot to the mounds of slag, tailings, and trash the start at this point and run North into the agricultural lease on the other side of the trail. The railroad line that served this area has been repurposed for use as a bike path and runs from the Great Bark Dog Park SW to the grain silos on the other side of Baseline (40th parallel). You can find more information by following this link, http://ecee.colorado.edu/regrid/files/mines/local_mines_map.pdf.

Use caution as there is a dry spot between the trail and the cache where a mini version of a choya cactus appears to be the only thing that is able to grow.

Congratulations to Edwards654 on the FTF!

Went with GanderGoose and #1Beefers on an "Alpenist" caching adventure this morning, with a few other cachers' caches sprinkled in. My husband's uncle worked in the Lafayette area coal mines many decades ago. It was fun and educational reading the history of the Gladstone. Thank you for the unique placement and cache Alpenist. SL. Earns a favorite point from me!

Had a super fun morning with my good caching buddies, #1 Beefers and mooseyaround. Appreciate the history. A sneaky, jumping cholla made the leap to my khakis. Neat cache. Another favorite point! Thanks for the placement, Alpenist!
