Great hike up Left Hand Canyon's Carnage Jeep trail (or a 4x4 ride if you have an extreme off-road vehicle). The cache is 150 yards off the jeep road and beneath a sizeable rock to prevent accidental discovery by the heavy jeep traffic. The cache is best approached from the west to avoid a steep ascent.
This is a pet photo cache. Bring a photo of your pet or a pet toy. The cache is a small ammo box, and the contents are in a ziplock bag that contains a log book. Please bring a pencil and remove the pen (I should have known better than to bring a ball point). You have two choices to approach the cache. The most direct route is to follow the jeeps up the road which is a winding stream bed for about .75 miles. The second choice is to turn left 100 yards up the trail onto CR286 and come in from the back side. This is an easier route for non-modified vehicles. Be warned that if you take the jeep road, you will walk through a firing range about .25 miles up the trail. Ask them to stop shooting while you pass. This cache is not too far off-trail, but because the previous cache here was taken, we moved the new cache another 100 yards up a very steep slope. You should approach from the west to avoid environmental damage to the sloped area.

Took my new boots out for a trial run with the goal of nabbing this cache I passed up before. I took a trail my GPS said existed... but really no longer does in practice. I assume the forest service decided to retire the trail after it was destroyed in the 2013 floods. There was some evidence of a trail following the creek, but it's probably just a deer trail. Though based on the scat I saw everywhere, it's more like a bear trail! Though less direct, it would have been much, much easier to follow one of the other trails to the south past GZ and double back to minimize the amount of rock hopping and bushwhacking.

Anyway, I made it to GZ and found the cache just where the last finder left it almost five years ago. The innards still appeared to be charred to a crisp, but the logbook's innards were surprisingly intact. Thanks for the adventure!

This was pretty cool. Those ammo cans sure are tough! I put a Christmas letter in there because its full of stories and pictures related to our pets. I really like the dog photo on the log book. The singed edges give the whole book an antique feel. This cache is a new favorite for me. I like that it's off the road a ways and that it was an effort to reach it. I also like that it survived a fire. Thanks!
