In the fall of 2007 the Colorado Rockies completed one of the most improbable stretches of baseball in Major League history to advance to their first ever World Series. For Rockies fans, and residents of the Rocky Mountain region in general, “Rocktober” produced the most sustained sports excitement in the region's history. In an area known for its love of Broncos football, Rockies baseball had everyone on the edge of their seat, every night, for over a month.
What made the run so special? On September 15th the Rockies just lost 3 in a row, were in 4th place in the National League West, and 6.5 games out of first. With only 14 games left in the season, for the Rockies to have any shot at the play-offs they’d likely have to win them all… and they nearly did.
The next day, September 16th, they crushed the Florida Marlins 13-0, notching the first win of the streak. They won the next game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but in only the third game of the streak, the season hung in the balance. In the bottom of the 9th inning, down by a run, facing the nearly unhittable Takashi Saito, first baseman Todd Helton launched a 2-run home run to give the Rockies a walk-off win keeping the very slim play-off hopes alive. They’d win their next 8 in a row, before losing 4-2 to the 1st place Arizona Diamondbacks. Following the loss, the Rockies were 2 games out of a play-off spot, with only 2 games to play. No team in history had ever made it to the World Series from that position. However, they finished the season by winning the final 2 games. This improbable scenario set up a rare 163rd game against the San Diego Padres, with the winner advancing to the play-offs.
“Game 163” was an emotional roller coaster lasting 13 innings. The Rockies came out hot scoring 4 runs in the first 3 innings. But the Padres powered to the lead scoring 5 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. By the end of the 5th inning the Rockies had come back to tie the game at 5. At the end of 8 innings the game was tied at 6. In the bottom of the 13th the Rockies found themselves down 2 runs, facing Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman. However, Hoffman allowed two doubles, then a triple from left fielder Matt Holliday tied the game 8-8. Two batters later utility man Jamey Carroll hit a line drive to right field allowing Holliday to dramatically score from third. The win sent the Rockies to the play-offs where they swept the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Divisional Series, and followed that up by sweeping the #1 seeded Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series. When it was all said and done, the Rockies had won their last 21 of 22 games before heading to the World Series. However, we don’t talk about that World Series……….
