CONGRATULATIONS TO icezebra11 FOR THE FTF!!

Eight years ago I published a multi-cache located in the Elkhorn Creek watershed of Poudre Canyon–“St. Brendan the Navigator’s Multi”, GC3A1WD.  It’s a challenging cache because it involves rugged terrain, difficult creek crossings, serious bushwhacking, and the need to understand and employ many features of GPSrs.  Today, as my puppies Orizaba and Chimborazo and I were hiking in Hewlett Gulch, I considered hiding stages of a comparable multi, while realizing that in this area, the terrain challenge would be much lower than it is in the St. Brendan’s series.

In the end, I decided to hide a much easier multi-staged cache along Gordon Creek than the navigational instruction one that’s along Elkhorn Creek.  Instead of seven stages, it has only three; instead of serious bushwhacking, it is almost all on-trail; instead of challenging water crossings, it has easy ones; instead of long off-trail stretches between cache stages, each stage is near a good trail and involves little special effort to reach.  Nonetheless, this sequence DOES necessitate basic familiarity with changing settings on your GPS unit, so don’t attempt it until you can quickly adjust position formats, etc. It is best to use a hand-held GPS unit instead of a smart phone for this cache.

There are many caches in Hewlett Gulch, but only one is presently located in the upper part of the Gordon Creek system.  The first stage is close to the trail junction well up the gulch.  Most hikers take the left trail at this fork and ascend up and out of  Hewlett Gulch above this junction.  In this case, you will use the right fork and get a nice tour of the upper part of the gulch, with the final stage positioned near the top of the watershed where the national forest land abuts the private land to the north.  Have your lunch or an extended snack at this special place and appreciate the views down the gulch from this final stage location!

Although this is a much easier multi than the St. Brendan’s sequence, you should still be prepared for a good hike and for changes in weather.  Bring food, fluids, sun block, extra clothing, and rain gear.  Be prepared for a hike of approximately 7.3 miles round trip with a cumulative elevation gain of about 575 feet.  The hike involves 15 un-bridged crossings of Gordon Creek each way, so be prepared for a total of 30 crossings–these are easy crossings unless stream flow is high.  A marvelous facet of Hewlett Gulch hikes is that dogs are allowed off-leash if you have them under voice control.  This factor is a major reason that Hewlett Gulch is one of my favorite hiking destinations, and a reason that I own many caches in the gulch and on the peaks rising above both sides of Hewlett.

Enjoy your outing.

Pixel Magic notified me that the first stage was missing. He offered to make another hike up Hewlett Gulch to replace the stage. I provided the information necessary and Peter made the extra hike. Thanks to his special effort, the entire sequence is now fully operational again, and tested. thank you, Pixel Magic!!

Last night I said my prayers to Saint Brendon the Navigator asking for help remembering my trip with Cacheman48 doing some hiking and navigating along another waterway. I was successful in that effort. Luckily I remembered the basics and was able to find this cache.

It is a great feeling getting to a spot and discovering that one's calculations were accurate. Thanks for another nice cache in the neighborhood.

Our oldest son and his wife had been visiting us this week and they had to drive back home to North Dakota today. They headed north about 9:30 am and after they left my wife asked me what I planned to do on Father's Day. That was an easy answer, a hike!

I wasn't able to leave the house until about 10:30 so it was a later start than I had hoped for. It was almost 11:30 when I arrived at the trailhead parking area and I was fortunate to get the last spot in the lot. But just as I stepped onto the trail the raindrops started falling. I surveyed the skies and decided to keep on heading up the trail as the clouds to the north and northwest didn't look too bad. I was glad I packed my rain jacket as it rained lightly for about the first half hour of my hike and then it quit. After that the skies were still overcast but no more rain fell.

After finding A Hewlett Gulch Puzzler, this was my next cache I targeted. I arrived at the posted coordinates and found the Stage 1 container. After reading the instructions, I had a pretty good idea as to how the rest of the cache would play out. I entered the Stage 2 coordinates and headed that way. After arriving at GZ for Stage 2 I was able to quickly find the container and read the next set of instructions. Yep, my suspicion was correct. I worked up the coordinates for the final stage and off I went. Soon I was at the final location. My calculations were correct and the container was right where my GPSr led me. I opened the container to find a blank log and I was happy to sign in the {FTF} position right at about 1 pm.

After re-hiding the cache I headed back down the trail for my next target, Dan Edward's Hewlett's Gulch cache. On my way there I came upon a rattlesnake in the middle of the trail. Up until that point I had been feeling bad that I had left my puppy Angel at home but after coming upon the snake, I was glad that she wasn't with me! I saw it when it was about 10 feet ahead of me but I'm not so sure I'd have seen it in time to keep Angel away from it.

Thanks Steve for creating this fine multi that requires the seeker to be very knowledgeable of the GPSr's capabilities!!!
