There was a time when this valley provided local produce for the new arriving miners and local residents. Indeed, across the valley, in Bachelor's Gulch, there was a big lettuce growing operation. The settlers who grew the produce fared better than the miners, as the real money was in providing goods and services to the intrepid gold seekers versus being a gold seeker one's self. 
What we have here is a remnant of a bygone day. If you are a little rusty on your micro searches, this one will challenge you. Keep an open mind! Congrats to luvinhorses on FTF; the first!
