Colorado Trees

Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) is a large coniferous tree native to western North America. Here are some interesting facts about it:

  1. Appearance: Ponderosa pines can grow up to 100 feet (30 meters) tall and have a straight trunk with reddish-brown bark that becomes deeply furrowed as the tree matures. The needles are long (5-10 inches or 12-25 centimeters) and come in bundles of three.

  2. Distribution: These trees are found in various ecosystems, including montane forests, grasslands, and even desert regions. They thrive in areas with well-drained soil and receive plenty of sunlight.

  3. Fire Adaptation: Ponderosa pines are well-adapted to fire-prone environments. Their thick bark helps protect them from low-intensity fires, and their serotinous cones (cones that remain closed until exposed to heat) release seeds after a fire, allowing for regeneration.

  4. Wildlife Habitat: Ponderosa pines provide habitat for various wildlife species. Birds, squirrels, and other animals use the trees for nesting and foraging. Woodpeckers often create cavities in the trunks.

  5. Economic Importance: The wood of ponderosa pine is used for construction, furniture, and paper production. It’s a valuable timber species

I found it with LilRyRy and CDRSheppo after the younger one’s swim lesson. I solved for the coordinates while we were still at the pool. I circled around GZ once before spotting the likely camo. Thanks for the puzzle!

I decided to hike around the whole loop today. There was only one other car in the parking area -- guess it's too hot for many. Days like today (95 degrees) are what happens when people keep saying they are tired of winter . Great camo... this is pretty unlikely to be messed with by muggles! TFTC!

Co [FTF] at 2:08 pm. I was working on another puzzle final in the area and had to text Animjason. He let me know about this little FTF party going on not too far away. I got there as soon as I could and we made the find on another FTF and then walked over to this one. I got the honors of spotting the container. Great setup. First in this series I've found I think! I look forward to finding more.
