This is one of a series of caches that are associated with the local history
In early 1882 a ferry was built by Patrick Gordon at this location, just above the Gunnison River. On April 1, 1882 Mr. Gordon and Deputy Scott’s ferry boat capsized while chasing lawbreakers and both men drowned.
In 1886, a bridge was built at this location by Groton Iron Bridge Company of New York, and was open in October that year. It was a poorly designed bridge which collapsed during construction, wagons were limited to walking speed, and no more than 50 cattle could be on the bridge at one time.
Because automobiles were too heavy for the bridge, it was replaced in 1933. A bottle of 3.2 wine (it was prohibition) was used to christen the bridge and Walter V. Champlin of Ouray was the first to cross on horseback. He was selected because he was the first to cross the 1886 bridge. More than 1000 cars crossed the bridge on that day.
The current bridge was built in 1989 and was christened by Mrs. Genevieve Rossler Wilson whom had christened the 1933 bridge.
Please take time to see the art that graces the abutments while looking for the cache.
