Although Delta, CO enjoys a number of wonderful murals commissioned by the city, there are also a few non-traditional “murals”. Some were commissioned by private citizens or businesses, some a group project, and some we haven’t discovered the story, yet…if you know, let us in on it!
Early in the 1970’s Delta High School senior classes started a tradition that began as clandestine and unsafe, but evolved into a class pride and police protected event each spring. This non-traditional “mural” can be easily found on the street behind the old high school building and playing field. Though colors brightest and most easily read in the spring, evidence remains throughout the year. Not from Delta? The story of this tradition, its changes and growth through the last 40+ years was featured in the local newspaper several years ago and can be read online at: http://en.calameo.com/read/000138363ba83759eed55 June 2, 2010 Delta County Independent, front page.
