Right in between two gulches, both named "Limekiln Gulch", there's a kid's fishing pond and...a lime kiln!
Cache is beside the Pitkin Road (Co Rd 76). Take a short, steep, rubbly climb to the cache. Wear good shoes. BYOP and TWEEZERS! Another lime kiln remnant can be found along the dirt road up the easternmost gulch.
Elevation at the cache: 9355'
The lime kilns of Gunnison County date back to the 1800's. They were used to "bake" calcium carbonate-bearing rocks into lime. In this particular lime kiln, limestone was mined just above the kiln and rolled down the hill and baked in the kiln. The lime was used for cement, chinking for log cabins, and also in smelters. After the railroad came to Gunnison County in 1881, the lime kilns became obsolete.

Cache blends with the surroundings and contains a logbook only -- no room for trade items. The cache container is not what you would normally expect to find, so search creatively. BYOP and TWEEZERS. BE STEALTHY -- you can be seen from the road.
Please re-hide it well -- this is a high kid-aged muggle area.

Out with friends making a loop from Buena Vista, over Monarch Pass then Pitkin and back to BV via Hancock Pass a total of 145 miles. We were about to give up when the devilish hide finally showed itself. Great hide, appreciate the work that went into it, gets a fav point. I am constantly amazed at the number of people who go geocaching without a pen.
