Geocache Up Here

On a peak at nearly 7,600 feet, views of the Denver environs. Set on Memorial Day 2007. Within White Ranch County Park, Jefferson County, Colorado. Some off trail hiking necessary and Topographic map/knowledge required. Groups should hike to the summit area in a dispersed fashion, not single file to avoid environmental damage.
On a peak top, which requires some off trail hiking. You should obtain, read and understand a topographic map so you can plot an easy approach. A straight line from the parking lot is NOT the best way. No GPS way-points provided, so no off-trail 'trails/tracks' are made.

This cache has been in place for over ten years, without creating a 'social trail' to the cache. When off trail, walk in / out along slightly different paths, to prevent creating a trail.

Topographic Trail Map from Jefferson County Open Space is at this URL www.jeffco.us/DocumentCenter/View/9387
The cache is atop the hill noted as 7,549 feet on the Open Space Trail Map.

Over the 10+ years of maintaining this cache, I have two paths that I follow to the cache. You could even do a loop, combining the two paths. Both paths described are from the Upper Parking Lot, to the Cache.

First approach is walking on the East branch of the Rawhide trail ( branch closest to the prairie / Denver, and is a hiking foot path ). Continue (North) past Princess Anne overlook ( the blue mileage marker square on the Open Space Trail map, SE of the cache, you will see the sign and a 'park bench' at the overlook ). Then head NW for a gentle climb to the ridge line, then head South along the ridge line to the cache.

Second approach is walking on the West branch of the Rawhide trail ( branch farthest from the prairie / Denver, and is a graded road ). Go through Sourdough Springs Campground , then continue on the Waterhole Trail. Make a right back onto the Rawhide Trail. Soon after this turn, you can make your way along the ridge line to the cache. I find this approach to be the easiest, since it's mostly on a dirt road, with smoother elevation changes.

When you are near the summit, seek the highest rocky outcrop surrounded by trees. There is usually a bare tree trunk / pole marking the summit. You may need to do some mild rock scrambling for the last 10 vertical feet or so, depending from which side you approach.

Set on Memorial Day, 2007. Please add log comments about your favorite Military Service member, still with us or not. I left an article on a dear family friend who passed away in the last year. Lt. Col. A.L. Hankin, USAF Ret. was a Bataan Death March Survivor, and career Air Force. I dedicate this cache to his memory. Please feel free to leave similar tributes in the log book, or exchange cache items in honor of ones military service, or your favorite branch of the military.

Be aware of Lightening Threats. Cache container is a metal ammo box, with "Memorial Day Cache" painted on the side. As park postings note, Mountain Lions, Bear and Rattlesnakes are present, be aware and be safe.

Owner maintenance. The cache is fully loaded with new trinkets. If you take something, leave something.
Thanks to everyone who helps keep this cache 'clean'. From the log book, it seems that half of the folks who sign the log, have stumbled across this cache by 'accident', while seeking an off trail high point with views.

My final find on a hot September day! A doozey I approached from the north. Made my way back down the southern slope. Sketchy but accomplished. TFTC!

Went for a walk in the White ranch open space on a foggy/chilly/soggy day (and enjoyed every minute of it) - this was the last of eight geocaches that I found along the way. TN-LN-SL. Thanks !

February 2 , 2018 (Ground Hog Day) - Owner Maintenance. I reloaded the 'treasure' contained within the cache. No need to replace the original 10+ year log book, since it's not even half full.
Thanks for keeping this cache in such great shape !!!

After my trip to Golden, I had time to pick up a few caches. I was last in the White Ranch Open Space Park back in April, so it was good to return and have the opportunity to test some new hiking gear. I was happy to make the find on this nice cache without any drama, despite the fact that it was starting to get dark. The cache is still in great shape. Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find, giving me a excuse for a nice hike, and bringing me to this cool spot; TFTC.

My son is retired Air Force but still contracts with them and his two sons are serving in the Air Force now. They have been on tours in the Mid East and Germany, where they also lived as children. Both are in the States now. One will be visiting this fall and I will bring him here.
I thought I picked a gentle approach from the southeast and verified it when I went off trail to the caches to the north of here. Should have gone back east to Rawhide. Enjoyed the views, Thanks
I see my car.. way over there

Thanks, GregoryBinCO! The walk to this one was not too bad, and I got great views. This cache gets a favorite point from me. I love these trails, and I had a great time concentrating on the trails to the north of the parking lot, mostly Rawhide Trail. I try to take at least one good hike a week as long as the trails are not icy. Today I tried for the first time a hiking app on my Samsung phone that tracked my route, distance, and elevation. It paused when I stopped to sign a log or to rest, and it resumed when I got going again. The hike was about 3 hours, and the total time was about 4 hours, with a distance of 7.18 miles. Now that I am retired, keeping fit is one of my main jobs.

I want to thank you for this wonderful cache. I will write more when I get home. It's a favorite! . . .This may be my all-time favorite cache. It is off trail, but not too far. It is on the top of an easy mountain to get to. It is an ammo box (I love the chain!). It has wonderful things inside. I took nothing because I had nothing with me that was as good as the swag that was there. And I logged in lots of my favorite servicemen. My grandson, an Air Force Academy graduate, who is now flying drones. My two brothers served in the Air Force. One was a captain and a bombardier and the other a sergeant. My nephew is a major in the Air Force. He has achieved the highest rank in the family, so far. And I can't forget my wonderful husband, who was drafted into the Army in the 50's, loved serving our country and being part of it. He has to be my number 1. Thanks again for maintaining this cache!
